For over two years, a warehouse in West Auckland known as ‘The Daktory’ has openly sold marijuana, and while police have been aware, they haven't shut it down.
But now The Daktory's leader has been convicted and is closing the doors.
You can either buy marijuana at the factory, or bring your own, after paying a $5 entrance fee.
“Suffice to say we haven't had any complaints from the community,” says The Daktory’s founder, Dakta Green.
News cameras have never been allowed inside while it's open for business, but at 8pm tonight owner Dakta Green and his employees close up shop, so let 3 News inside for the final day.
“I am on bail after my conviction three weeks ago and one of the conditions is I can't [go into the factory],” he says.
Mr Green has been convicted of selling cannabis, possession for supply and permitting the premises to be used for commission of a crime. With his conviction he says other volunteers are at risk of the same thing.
Inside there are three cats, slogans, marijuana and some munchies. Most of the people 3 News met have been coming to The Daktory for around two years.
“It’s somewhere I can come down and socialise. I can bring my grandmother down,” says Marki Herbert.
Marki says she's used marijuana here. Grandmother Kathleen hasn't, preferring to stick to the cheeseburgers on offer.
Outside, Mr Green watches.
“I’m going to be sentenced at the end of the month and it could be imprisonment,” he says.
After tonight The Daktory will be no more, however it will continue as a centre of activism for marijuana law reform.
