My own drying method.

Hello.
Got my first flush last Friday, and started the drying process. As the air humidity where I live is so damn high (20 meters from sea and it's summer now), I decided to avoid the fan method, as I didn't think it would work at all. Instead, I took a newspaper page, rolled it around them (113g) like a toffee, put it in a small plastic bag, and also put like 6 or 7 silica gel bags, like this ones:

Then I sucked the all the air I could with my mouth, being careful about not breathing inside, and sealed the bag with some tape.
Will they be dried for next Saturday? (8 days) Poll below.
Thanks

You really aught to order a dehydrator to help. Moving airflow is key to dehydrating these babies.

The question is: would more silica gel solve it, or I need to go for a dehydrator? Is there really a risk of rotting in 8 days? As I already said, the relative humidity here is 75-80% this days, fan is not an option I believe

The fan will help get them mostly dry in about a day or so at 90% humidity. Then you could use the silica when they are 95% dry.

Are you saying that with a relative humidity of 90% on the air, a fan will almost dry them?

yea, they will get somewhat dry with a fan. The silica you have there would be saturated WAY before they get dry, the way you are doing it.

Case in point:
I live where the RH outside is 80~100%, pretty much year round... That being said, the only way we can successfully dry wood is to get it off the ground and exposing it to massive airflow... Likewise; I successfully dry clothes outside on cold, cloudy, humid days; as long as there is a significant and continual breeze blowing (which we get a LOT of here).
Cheers

idk i use a box with a bandana in it with a fan on top, 2 holes at the bottom causes air to flow thro. its alot healthyer than haveing silica gel or anthing that says "do not consume on it". the box tek takes like under a week and its prefect and worth the wait.

my dehydrator takes less than 24 hours. Before I got it, I used a fan in front of my open oven door and dried them in 24-30 hours. Taking so long to dry them invites mold growth

Just in case someone ever finds himself in a similar situation. Silica gel can hold 40% of it's own weight in water. It turns out, then, that to dry 100g of fresh mushrooms, which means absorbing 90g of water, you need 225g of silica gel. These small bags do usually contain about 1 gram of silica gel. Then, you need 225 of these bags, at least. Obviously, it's not the proper way to do it.

Kudos to you OP, for doing a little research. So many people come on here and just want answers, when what they really need is research

Five damp_rid containers placed inside of a 24"x18"x18" plastic tub with a box fan placed on top works wonders, can dry a wet harvest down to six ounces in about 3 day.. Only fill each damp_rid container about a quarter of the way up, thats all u need..
