Any gym experts??
    #14563453 - 06/05/11 07:18 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So im around 190 at 5 10

i want to drop 30 lbs thats my goal. So today will be my first day hitting up the gym.

Most of my fat is just in the belly area. So what would be the best way to start this... Cardio 30min to a hour for a few weeks then maybe start toning the area with more cardio.

Idk any help appreciated?

people will tell you the best way to burn calories is to use your largest muscles....squats. You'll never flatten your stomach without exersizing it, sit-ups

he is correct. Fatloss is typically innefecient core/total body exercise with high reps and short rest periods. Combine running and fatloss through weightlifting and your golden.

Everyone who has ever worked out thinks they are an expert but the bottom line is burn more calories than you consume.  Do cardio and lift weights.  Work every muscle out and rest until you are not sore anymore.  At first it will take about 3 days to recover but within a month or two you will be able to do cardio everyday and lift every other.  If you stay away from the processed foods sodas and sweets you will get in shape faster than you think.  I personally love running.  It took about two months before I got in good enough shape to enjoy it but now its one of my favorite things to do.

5-6 small meals a day.

3 normal course meals and 2 smallsmall meals or healthy snacks.

that will keep your metabolism fired up.

just stick with it like at first its a painful chore but before you know it you will be looking forward to it.  The human body is designed to exercise it dosent function properly without it and the difference in the way you feel being in shape vs out of shape is really amazing.

I got down to 4% body fat with serious dieting and weight lifting, no cardio - can't stand that shit.  Too boring.  That having been said, I have been slacking lately (ranging from injuries to having to work too much) and up to 10% body fat.  5'10 and 190lb, if you have a gut at that weight it means you need to pack on muscle.  Get to the weights!

i'm pretty knowledgeable about gym work.

if your aim is to be cutting wait, your mostly going to be aiming your work towards cardio, weight lifting will help you, but not as much as cardio. you can do some light weight lifting to help exercise the rest of your body and burn off some excess calories in the process/tone up.

The two best plain cardio exercises are : Running and Swimming.

Running on a treadmill is fine, but it cheats you into think your doing more work then you are, because really the machine runs for you halfway, as once your feet land it moves them backwards to a degree. So actual running out on a soft surface with a good pair of running shoes is good. dont run on concrete and things as this will damage your ankle/knee/hip joints.

Swimming is actually a really great way to do cardio, its fun, keeps things interesting, and will get you hella toned, as your using your whole body. Swimming is great because its 'low impact' as opposed to running which is 'high impact', so you can't really get injured from it or anything. go to the pool and just swim laps in alternating strokes untill you either can't swim anymore or get bored of it.

Bike riding is also another option, again keeping things fun and interesting, its a lower impact on your joints then running, and its great to get out and ride trails up mountains or just paths into forrests and whatnot. But bike riding is not as effective as running/swimming in cutting weight. still good though.

Boxing is actually amazing for cardio. it works your whole body just like swimming, will get you hella toned, and will also build alot of confidence in yourself as well. i highly suggest training in some kick boxing/boxing of some sort. it's one of the best workouts you can do really.

Your aim is to get your heart rate up to 180-(your age). so if your 20 you want your heart rate @ 160 or higher etc. and you want to maintain it there for a decent ammount of time. 30mins-1 hour is alot to start out. just work your way up, do what you can to start and keep at it.

i think one of the best ways to do this and to cut weight is to use something called " Tabata " or interval training. basically you alternate between jogging and sprinting for the period of your workout, but this is very taxing and difficult. you could start out just alternating between walking/jogging, and progressing into walk/sprint, then into jog/sprint.

if you want to build weight lifting into your daily routine, i would say get to the gym and start out with 5-10 minutes on some form of cardio, to get you warmed up. then go on and go through your weight regime for the day, and finish off again with a cardio session where you really push yourself. this way your heart rate will be up the whole time and you will be maximising the amount of callories your burning.

if you want i can recomend a basic guide for muscle groups to target in your weight lifting sessions on each day etc.

Ofcourse with an aim of cutting weight, you will get far better results if you combine it with eating healthy. sure you can just rely on the work, but it will take you longer and you will have to work harder. you need to start eating healthy meals, i.e. oats for breakfast, something lean like tuna for lunch or salads, and then a good steak and lots of veggies for dinner. portion control helps too. a common tip alot of people use is to get their normal meal, split it in half, eat half, wait an hour or two and finish the other half, this way it keeps your metabolism working constantly throughout the day (your metabolism burns majority of your weight believe it or not). so instead of having your metabolism spike up during the one big feast of the day and drop down, eating small portion controlled meals encourages your metabolism to be burning away all day constantly.

let me know if you have any other questions

I'm doing a similar thing as you op, fat loss and Im also trying to build as much muscle as I can. I do cardio every day for  about 30-45 minutes keeping my heart rate around the 150's
I also lift 5 days out of the week each day doing a different muscle group (shoulders, back, legs, arms, chest) with high weight low reps.
I'm also dieting, high protien, low fat, zero sugar all I'm drinking is water. Cutting soda is a good start, but watch out for shit like fruit juices because they're loaded with sugar. Also when eating meats try eating really lean meat that helps lower your fat intake.
Sticking to this routine I've lost about 15 pounds this past month and thats including what I've gained in muscle.

sounds good, just gotta get an ab workout in there somewhere.

i find its good to work muscle groups that are complimentary, and superset them, so that you each set helps the previous, and also it gives you a bit of a rest from the main muscle group, allowing you to go all out on every set.

so things like:

back/bicep

chest/tricep

shoulder/legs

and mixing in abs and traps where ever is easiest

i find supersetting to be really beneficial, because if i'm doing biceps, and i do like 3 sets of curls, then 3 sets of hammer curls, then 3 sets of preacher curls, my bicep will just start tapping out and i wont be able to lift properly on the later sets/exercises because my muscles havent had time to rest.

but if i break it up with like 3 sets of curls, then 3 sets of a back exercise like chin ups (normal or assisted), it gives my biceps a break, while i go heavy on my back (and it also works out the biceps in the process). then i start hammer curls 3 sets, and then onto a front seat row machine for 3 sets, then 3 sets preacher curls, followed by 3 sets of the wide or close grip lat pull down. That way i'm putting maximum effort into every set, and the workouts are complementing eachother.

but with building muscle you want to remember 3 basic things.
  • work hard in the gym, lift big or untill fail
  • eat well and get a good dose of protein into you after the workout
  • get a goodnights rest!! (sleep is very important)

190 and 5'10... Why would you want to lose 30 pounds??? You would be looking skinny. Is that what you want??

Dosile you do the same amount of sets with your back as your biceps? I sure hope not...

Go on a ketogenic diet, you won't lose nearly the muscle per pound of weight lost than on a standard diet.
