What is the best way to browse anonymously on a mac with safari/firefox? After reading
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2552759
I'm kind of paranoid.

If you have a unix shell account, tunnel your web connections over ssh using ssh -D.
If not, use a proxy service or tor.
Or use other peoples wireless like starbucks.

Any specific settings to make sure I get right on tor, I've never used it before, but I'll mainly be using it for browsing te shroomery and growery.

Is that part of the vidalia package on the tor website? I can't seem to find a privoxy download

So I downloaded and ran the package on the tor website, but I can't seem to even log into my shroomery account when running tor. Anyone know how to fix this?

tor has lots of good documentation on there site and there wiki it is really simple once you get it to work
https://check.torproject.org/?lang=en-US&small=1
run privoxy, start videlia, it should start a new browser window that has private browsing by default. set proxy to localhost(127.0.0.1) you can do some other neat things with privoxy but its default config should be setup to work quite well with your system.

Yeah when I start vidalia and tor boots up it opens up a new firefox window that has the tor icon active in the bottom right hand corner. But when I type in log in info and then hit accept, it refreshes the page and empties the fields as if I put nothing in.

if you're on a page and then activate tor you'll have to repress enter on the URL to reload it Tor should tell you this, assuming thats the problem, does the checktor site say you're using tor?

No I'm not on the page when I activate tor, when I run tor it opens up a brand new firefox browser. Yeah it says I'm using tor and my IP is definitely different, but any time I try and log in it refreshes the page as if I didn't enter my info.

what youll need to do firstly; is go into options, security or privacy one or the other, go to cookies, leave it unchecked for accepting cookies but off to the right youll see an exceptions tab; hit that, type in www.shroomery.org then hit the 'allow for session' hit ok. Then when you're at the shroomery site, dont use the upper left login thing, undernieth the banner and above the forum index youll see a 'blah blah blah login or register blah etc etc blah blah' hit that link, youll come to an actual login page and then log in via that should work!

Worked perfectly I can't thank you enough, are there any really important settings I should customize or just leave Firefox and Vidalia alone? I had to download Firefox 3.6 because I guess 4.0 isn't compatible with Torbutton.

I can log in fine now, but it seems to be resisting the remember me function. Went into firefox and clicked remember passwords for websites, but that isn't working either. Is there another setting I'm missing?

yeah I wouldnt worry bout remembering you. the thing about anonymiititty is you want to leave as lil a trace behind as possible, if you are really paranoid you should learn more about how programs leave information on your computer. if you really need to be clean and secure use a linux LiveCD or something that cant write to disk. there is a pretty informative website called www.anti-forensics.com has lots of good information pertaining to this particular subject.
I for one dont really care about such things, but I like being anonymous, I like having that option. The more I lean about such things the more I realize how much there is that is left behind, how much is stored about you. Just from google searching and other seemingly simple things. I don't really worry bout what people might do about that information at this time, but what makes me paranoid is what could happen with such information in years to come. Good luck mate.

I browse the shroomery through Tor myself and I also use FoxyProxy on top of that. It's a free plugin that will work right with Firefox on your mac. My last point of origin was Antarctica.

Do you guys recommend going this route when surfing..?

I've been browsing using firefox with the Vidalia/Tor bundle now since I figured it out. I feel much safer posting and such especially with grow journals and the like.
One question though, is it bad to use safari at the same time I'm running tor through firefox? My Ip is are different when using both.
