How to accomodate damp vermiculute.

So my vermiculite I get is always kind of damp, like if I squeeze it hard it will stay together. when i use the 2:1:1 recipe, it ends up getting bacterial contams. What can I do to help this situation? Thanks everyone.

Try oven sterilizing it? Kills two birds with one stone.

I am assuming that you are PCing, and the contams come from the wet verm on top. Simple oven drying will work. Verm can get hot without hurting anything - 350F on a cookie sheet should work. You could also spread it in the sun to dry.

the obvious answer would be to dry it out, via oven or direct sun spread out on some newspaper.

another problem with damp verm. is it messes up the ratio. Where do you get damp verm. at? The mine?

no, home depot. the verm used to be fine, but one day I got it, and it was damp. they're all damp now/ I even picked up a 17 litre bag from a garden store down town, and its a lot better, but still damp. EDIT and yeah, the ratio was what I was worried about, then it was mentioned the "dry" verm layer would be damp too, literally, out of 18 jars, 18 jars contamed. I NEVER have even one contam, but all of a sudden everythings fucked.

As said above bake it in the oven to dry it out before use. An alternative is to spread it out in the sun to dry. Don't leave wet verm in a plastic bag. If you do, cobweb and similar molds will attack it. RR

I had a bag from Lowes that was wet. It did smell of cobweb.

This is just a guess, you could be be getting damp verm straight from the bag due to the fact that it is just that time of year. What I mean is that all the sow has just melted so there is more moisture in the air. Towards the middle of June the bags will probably be more dry or completely dry. I'm just guessing though.

I wish it was that reason. As soon as I open the totally sealed bag, its damp, I can even feel it when the bags closed. Oh well, i will probably oven sterilize it
