Someone just told me this and I cant wrap my mind around how it could conceivably be possible. I think it's a grossly false statement that someone told me to make me feel better. Discuss.

I did and they went on about there being a fine line between quirky and awkward and how some people find quirky to be charming if you blur the line a little.

This is a meaningless statement..anything can be an asset if you make it one.

Sell your story to a medical journal and then join a freak show.

I assume you are talking about girls here. They may find it cute if you are really attractive, but for the most part it's a negative. Confidence means a lot when trying to attract females.

Touche. I was thinking about it purely from an attraction standpoint.

I can't see why not, especially if you make it one.
If you've made something an asset, then, obviously, it can be an asset..that's why the statement "awkwardness can be an asset if you make it one" is practically meaningless. It's like saying a house can be a place to live if you make it a place to live. Duh!

I wouldn't suggest that..but, if you've made it an asset, then it can obviously be an asset because you've made it an asset.

I'm thinking they probably meant to say something like "Awkwardness doesn't have to be a burden, and can actually be an asset." instead.

Well, IMO, that statement acknowledges that awkwardness is generally undesirable, and basically posits that it needn't be.
Makes perfect sense to me.

So maybe the right thing to do would be to go ahead and be awkward and not feel shame about the fact that I dont pick up on subtle hints and nonverbal ques?

That's one way to look at it..another way may be to learn a lesson from awkward moments, such as how to prevent future ones from occurring.
