To be honest i know its not.....but I wanted an IN YOUR FACE title that would grab attention.
My question is how do other countries handle the mentally ill? Is it higher or lower? What do they use to treat it?

talks about how other countries used to treat mental illness differently, as more of a 3rd party that enters the effected. By believing this they treated them better and much more humane, and their schizo's were alot more under control. Until america and our idea's come in that is

Fucking amazing article! /thread
Favorite parts were
-In a study conducted in Turkey, for example, those who labeled schizophrenic behavior as akil hastaligi (illness of the brain or reasoning abilities) were more inclined to assert that schizophrenics were aggressive and should not live freely in the community than those who saw the disorder as ruhsal hastagi (a disorder of the spiritual or inner self).
-people with schizophrenia in developing countries appear to fare better over time than those living in industrialized nations.
-This was the startling result of three large international studies carried out by the World Health Organization over the course of 30 years, starting in the early 1970s. The research showed that patients outside the United States and Europe had significantly lower relapse rates — as much as two-thirds lower in one follow-up study. These findings have been widely discussed and debated in part because of their obvious incongruity: the regions of the world with the most resources to devote to the illness — the best technology, the cutting-edge medicines and the best-financed academic and private-research institutions — had the most troubled and socially marginalized patients.
Article should be a required read for many

I think schizophrenia is exacerbated by the disconnection from the environment and community that a lot of people live with in the developed world. If you have a clear task to perform every day that facilitates the survival of yourself and the people around you I would imagine it's much harder to get lost in your head. But here we buy packaged food, do not know our neighbors, and often don't even have to work in order to live comfortably. It's a recipe for insanity, at least until the brains of our descendants atrophy to cope with the diminished workload.
But yeah, different cultures have different ideas of what constitutes mental illness. In China, disagreeing with the government is a mental illness.
