Summer 2011 Conditioning.
    #14555262 - 06/03/11 11:52 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So I have been doing some conditioning. I have been getting creative as hell and having alot of fun!

I live in the country so I have tons of privacy. What I am working with so far is two cinder blocks, one heavy chain, a tire, trees, and my own body weight. I have been working on strength and conditioning at the same time. What I mean is, instead of just running or swimming, I am using challenging weight in and certain obstacles to condition and at the same time work strength.

------------------------------

Today:

-I ran with a tire above my head for a couple laps on my backwoods path.

-I did 40 pushups, and climbed up and down a thin tree as many times as I could.

-I wrapped the chain around my neck and took a cinder block in each hand then proceeded to march back and forth on my backwoods path.

-After that I tied the chain around the two cinder blocks and pulled the blocks down my path. It was a great grip and lat workout!

-Lastly I found a horizontal tree that had fell down. It was about neck level from the ground. I would jump up and plant my hands on it; resting my hips on the tree,  and then do a kind of dip motion and push myself up. I did that as many times as I could.

--------------------------------

I am really excited about creative conditioning. Its so fun to be experimentive with workouts. Does anybody have anything they would like to share that could be challenging? Ill try it.

I have enjoyed today so much that I think I am going to strength train 2-3 days a week and condition 1-2 days a week. I dont see a problem with that does anybody else? Its not like im running 10 miles. I think I should still be able to eat enough to make gains in my strength training.

Sounds great, love the creativity. Pulling the blocks sounded like a home made powerlifting coniditioning sled.

I love this! Pretty fuckin awesome if I do say so myself. I'm all about bodyweight things myself and find that it really gets you in touch with the way you work and how you move. I love to climb trees myself, I live in a rural area for now so people look at me funny when I go for a good climb but whatever. Keep posting some of your stuff man, I would love too keep reading!

I wasn't gonna click on this because usually threads about working out don't appeal to me much, but I'm glad I did.  Very creative, I really admire the way you're going about it.  You have given me some really good ideas.

Right now I count on my job for strength training, and jump rope for my aerobics.  I like to find ways I can exercise, and get something done too.  Rather than use power tools I do everything by hand or with the most simple tool possible, even if it takes forever, just to feel my body move.  One of my all time favorite things to do is digging a big rock out of the ground, building a ramp and pushing it out of it's hole to wherever it's going.  I don't know why, theres just something about it that I find satisfying, and its a great workout.

Excellent thread OP.

I do a great deal mixed conditioning and training from a different sources. Look into a book called capoeira conditioning it has some basic movements and poses that will work you to you drop.

Like Going into a back bridge then cartwheeling out of it to the side. Repeat side to side.

1 handed hand stands leaning up against something like a tree.

Playing tag with your feet with a friend - lift one foot up off the ground and try to tag the top of your friends foot while hopping around on the other foot - hard, really fun, and you'll be pouring sweat after a while.

I like really long distance long boarding as well for core/lower body workouts. Did 40 miles once in an afternoon felt great afterwords very sore.

Any plyometrics are good too - clapping pushups, box jumps, burpies. I hear crossfit has a lot of good stuff to try. Have fun :lolsy:

Herd a lot about crossfit myself, seems like a pretty good program to learn things from.

One handed hand stands eh? That's one i'm definitely going to try sounds pretty tuff, even if you are leaning against something.

Just be careful. Easy to hurt yourself doing some of those style workouts. (same with structured tradional workouts though)

I started with rocky style training a couple years ago, didn't stick with it for long though.

Although i am sure it has merit, i think you'd probably gain more strength from tradional body weight, KB and BB.

The thing about tradition workouts I find, is that they don't necessarily translate into real life.  In order to do stuff like this you have to build all your bodies muscles from the core down to the tiniest muscles in your extremities.  If you think of it like that I think you are much less likely to hurt yourself.

I like the idea that the food I injest is going to muscles that will come into play in real-life, I don't often find myself in situations where I use one specific muscle group. not that a "regular" workout couldn't be tailored to do the same as what I do, maybe even with better/faster results, but I feel that most people in the gym are not focusing on their core muscles enough.  I do understand the idea of muscle isolation but I think that that in itself can be dangerous in its own way.

I would say that muscle isolation is a major downfall and a huge reason why people don't always find that they look the way they want to. The body was built to work together in coordination. When you isolate a muscle group you throw off the rest of the body by not building all the other muscles connected.

That's why you combine both. Traditional strength split with cardio and conditioning days.

Hey guys. I just bought a rope so I could set up a rope climb.

My question!
.....

the rope I bought is not too thick. Probably as thick as a quarter. I tried to grip on to it and I couldnt climb it very well.

Are climbing ropes supposed to be thicker than that?

I feel like its not that I am too weak because I do pullups, climb thin trees, etc..

I need some help on this one.

Yah definitely to thin brother, I would say a climbing rope should be about twice as thick. Awesome idea though I need to get one now that you mention it, great excerise and really fun to do!

the ropes we used in school to climb with were about the thickness of a redbull, or a bit thicker.

You should look into Le Method Naturelle, OP. It sounds very similar to what you've come up with on your own.

Just ran 7.5 miles in 60 minutes at the gym. I know that isn't the fastest pace, but I am definitely getting better at this.
