Harvesting and Drying procedure! urgent help needed!

Well as of right now my cake is starting to pull through. I have done the bare minimum for this cake, being the only survivor of six. I have been giving barely any light and spraying once a day, along with fanning once a day (sometimes 1-3 for both)
My question consists of, should i wait till all mushrooms grow to full potential before harvesting, or should i harvest one at a time when they reach "veil breaking" stage.
I am also planning on buying the "snackster food dehydator" (wrong name but meijer has the one i want, temp control, lowest at 96 degrees)
How do i go about doing my first harvest ever? How do i store fresh mushrooms if i pick seperatly, because i would want them all in the dehydrator at the same time.
and lastly, should i cut stems in half when being in dehydrator? how long in their! need help, i think i need to harvest soon! thanks!

Just starting my first grow myself so take this for what it is worth...
From what I read (a ton) you are just fine with that dehydrator. It's actually a fairly good one. Load that thing up with your fresh fruits. Set it on it's lowest temp and walk away for 12 hours. Check your boomers, flip them and move the trays around. Only split the stipe on any extra large or dense ones. It should take 48-72 hours to be cracker dry. (You can finish with some desiccant or litter and a fan if not totally cracker dry yet) If your dryer is too full, just put your fresh mush in the fridge until you have room. They will keep fine for a couple days and by then your dehydrator will be empty again
Total noob here but I have gleaned a bit of info from here and several books I've been reading.
Good luck!

Looking at that pic you have, looks like Golden Teachers? All those on that cake should dry just fine in your dehydrator, no splitting needed prob Looks tasty!

The majority of them will be ready to pick all at the same time, those dark headed pins in the top left corner are aborts, the rest you can pick when they get bigger, although I don't think they will reach the size of the others

Yes golden teachers! Need to know about should I wait for all fruits to bloom to put in dehydrator or pick when each is ready? And also, should my caps be flat when picked or still arched a little?

ok i know sorry, actually been reading up and learning myself. I can't always rely on people giving me the answers. Thank you for your help steel monkey.
Last quick question...
I am purchasing the dehydrator as stated. I only have one cake with the 7ish shrooms on it..How long would the dehydrator need to become cracker dry. And correct me if im wrong, if cracker dry is reached in "x" hours, leaving them in for (x n) wouldn't matter or effect the potency. Im just worried about since i have such little yield, if i somehow over dehydrate?
Comments appreciated!

well a ball park would be 6 hours or so but ofcourse its hard for anyone to say,but just as a example if they reached cracker dry at 6 hours and you left them in for ten your potency wouldn't be effected so you would notice

If you're just doing a few cakes, don't bother with a dehydrator. Go to Hobby Lobby or some place like it and get the silicon desiccant that's used to dry flowers.
Put your mature fruits in front of a fan for a day (if you have air conditioning or dry air) then put them in a sealed container with the desiccant for another day. Cracker dry in 48 hours.
If you plan on doing bulk grows, that's when a dehydrator becomes necessary.

well dehydrator is already bought...i am planning on bulk grows so at least i have one now. steel monkey a little confused on your post? if it takes 6 for cracker dry, potency will not be affected for keeping it in longer?

Yes thats exactly what I'm saying,it would take awhile at 90 to 130,140 degrees to break down the potency so you would notice.I've left mine in my dehydrator for 12 plus hours with no loss of potency on a 3 gram dosage

They do look yummy, pick those aborts before they rot, the're generally more potent than your mature fruits

i agree 1)aborts are NICE 2)leaving them in the dehydrator for longer than "X" hours will not affect the potency 3)for small batches, silicon desiccant is the way to go 4)those veils are about to rip; harvest just before, or just as they are tearing back-->when you dry caps that are flat, they end up looking like shit. and there is no use in waiting that long, because at that point, all their energy is directed to releasing the spores, not producing Psilocin/Psilocybin, whatever.
great grow though! what happened to your other cakes?!

Well I had 6 nocd up. And 3 stopped colonizing about 70% done, I have one more jar fully colonized ready for dunk and roll, and the last two were birthed (one in picture and other didn't fruit in chamber!)
It was a weird process.
When harvesting do fruits need to be rinsed off or anything. Or go right in dehydrator?
I'm harvesting in 5 hours when I return from work this morning!

Just clean the ends of the fruits with a toothbrush and don't wash, just right into the dehydrator. As for your fruiting chamber just wash it out with soapy water and pour boiling water over your perlite in a colander in the sink

So I can re use perlite? When I first put the perlite in I used tap water, cold I think. How often does the perlite need to be changed if at all?

Its good for a few grows as long as you keep it clean.I use new perlite about every six months but I'm sure there is cultivators out there that have used it a lot longer

Perlite is good forever, just refresh it by washing it well after each grow. It's a volcanic rock, it's not going to "wear out" .
For cleaning, a toothbrush on the bottom works but scissors are faster. Lop off the substrate at the bottom, you're not going to lose much weight. If you do bulk you will definitely want to use scissors and overall weight is less of a concern at that point.

shit....i never clean off the substrate, i just dry it. if it falls off, thats cool, if it doesn't, i just eat it.
oh, and if your 1/2 pint jars stop colonizing, MAKE SURE you have a filter on the lid (for GE). and if they slow down toward the bottom, just flip those bad boys over and slide the cake so its resting on the lid, not on the bottom of the jar. your myc needs to breath, and by putting the air pocket at the non-colonized bottom section, it will help it out. just don't do it too soon, cuz the whole bitch will stall. do it at 92% colonized, or so.
and dont take cakes out of the FC. i mean, whats the harm in having it in there? even if it never does anything, you can have the satisfaction of knowing you gave it your all.
DO NOT WASH OFF YOUR MUSHIES!!! i repeat, NO WATER CONTACT OTHER THAN MIST!!!

Good tip on boiling and reusing the perlite. Stuff is getting expensive around here. Any preference on size? Just ran across some stuff at the hydro store that is size 4 and 5 which is way way coarse. Been using stuff that is much finer than that. Any thoughts? Longevity or performance if anyone has noticed a dif. Thanks.

The advantage of perlite is that it has millions of tiny pits all over the surface which catch and release water as vapor. Air flowing through the perlite gets hydrated easily. I would think that bigger perlite is meant for hydroponic grows, now what we use it for. Just my opinion though. I know the small stuff can be extremely messy, but I think it's necessary.

Works for me. Thanks. Saves some money that way too The smaller grade is cheaper by about 5-10$ a bag.
