Caffeine is a mutagen

I was randomly browsing some scientific sites and read an interesting tidbit.

FINCHAM & DAY Fungal Genetics Fungal Genetics. QK602.F5 (1963) pg 64 Chemicals shown to be mutagenic in fungi include caffeine, dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphate, ethyl methane sulphonate, ethylenimine ...
I see lots of you guys add coffee to your substrates and spawn jars here. That might not be the best idea after all. Or perhaps the mutations it causes are beneficial. I can't seem to find the actual paper to read for free anywhere. If anyone knows how to find scientific papers for free, let me know!

most people add coffee grounds to their substrate not actual coffee. i think the caffeine is all leached out when the coffee is made. but i sometimes add a little bit of weak coffee when i am simmering my grains. many say that it gives the mycelium a nice boost. i have not really noticed a huge difference though but I wasnt really paying attention to growth sppeed that much either.

Not correct, at least in the quantities we use by adding coffee. When I first discovered the benefits of coffee in mushroom growing, I and many others experimented with pure caffeine to see if that was the agent responsible for the increased performance, but it had zero effect.
There's well over 200 compounds in coffee and nobody knows which provide the benefit or if it's a combination of many of them. I've never seen one single mutant come as a result of using coffee in substrates or grains.
Be very careful looking at research papers from the 1960s and earlier when we were just learning how to grow mushrooms in sterile technique. There were so many variables being learned at once, the experiments were often compromised by inexperience. RR
