whats up shroomery?
in the process of building my flow hood wprkstation. Thanks to ya'll i got my HEPA unit framed up with my blower mounted and everything. I am going to be building my workstation this weekend i hope, next week at the latest.
I know that stainless steel is the preferred material for a laminar flow work bench tops , buts its really expensive where im at. a sheet of stainless big enough for my workstation (even super thin gauge) would cost me almost as much as i spent on my whole station so far...
my flow hood is built around a 2 x 4 filter so im trying to avoid buying a super expensive piece of stainless but if thats what i gotta use i'd rather get it now than have to get it later.
can i use any other easily cleaned solid non porous material for my laminar flow work station?
are aluminum or galvinazed steel ok for use on flow hood stations? i dont know how they'd handle frequent sterilization with alcohol?
local big box hardware store has laminate coutertops for dirt cheap and i was thinking that might be a way less expensive alternative?
-------------------- I am looking for any shiitake strains, any oyster strains, and lions mane cultures. i got cool edibles to trade. "Mycologists on the other hand grow for the love of growing. They want to experiment with various species, substrates, and fruiting environments. They'll move on to isolate strains, attempt hybridization, and in general treat cultivation as an artform, rather than a chore that must be performed as a means to an end. They'll work twice as hard for a ten percent gain, just for the love of perfection..." Roger Rabbit

I just use a varnished table, with another peice of varnished wood to raise my workspace into the sterile airflow, with a metal rack on top of that. I clean the table, wooden stand and rack with alcohol. Never had a contam, other than from a dirty syringe!
Im pretty sure RR just uses a varnished table with a metal rack on it.
Just use anything thats not porous as you said

I do & no metal fab shop is going to have that large of S.S. to just give away.
ozzy - good point, OP could def. go that direction.
bakerx - try local restaurant auctions. They're always giving away great myco supplies...

I did & gave you the best advice to get the cheapest piece of SS steel.
You're NOT/NEVER going to find enough SS scrap @ a metal shop to build a table unless you're a master welder, who I doubt would be able to do it.
I can get a SS table @ 8'W x 2'D x 2.5'H for $120 off of auctions.
Digging is part of the hobby, get used to it.

i watched the RR videos again and looked at a bunch of other flow hood workstation examples as i could find. i noticed lots of non stainless tabletops.
i figure i'll just get a cheap ass laminate countertop piece from a big box hardware store, seal the outside edges with silicone.
