question for those w/ long hair
    #14553914 - 06/03/11 01:14 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I'm growing out my hair for the first time ever, anyway it's just reached my shoulders and I'm in the awkward middle stages I guess. My hair is normally pretty thick and straight, but it's starting to curl a lot in the back and even the sides a little bit now that it's getting longer. My question is is this normal and will it straighten out when it gets longer? Right now I look totally retarded with my hair going straight down then curling out... If it won't fix itself when longer than what do I do to stop it from curling. I don't use any hair products other than shampoo/conditioner atm. Any other tips for someone growing out their hair for the first time?

It'll probably get curlier.  My brother didn't know he had curly hair until he was 21 years old.  It always looked straight when it was short, but as soon as he grew it he started to look like Sideshow Bob.

Yeah, it tends to get wavy. My hair is pretty wavy.

It only gets curlier.
Mine stays straight until it gets down below my ears...eventually the curls for me turn into waves though once it gets weighed down more....then it dreadlocks eventually.

When I had long hair down to my chest I had a lot of split ends and my hair thinned (now that it's not long and I've taken care of it better, I don't have that problem).

My hair stayed straight/wavy, but I didn't take care of it well so I got knots too. One time I was in the mall and a girl from philosophy class in college saw me on her break or whatever then we went to the place she worked in the hallway of the mall and she straightened my hair for free. Was pretty awesome. If I ever grow my hair long again I'm gonna need something to straighten my hair.

I never get my shit trimmed so I have loads of split ends, but I wash it every day and it's pretty manageable most of the time. Definitely would be nicer if I trimmed it regularly though.

Maybe you need a trim? When I grow my hair out I use girly shampoos maybe that'd help. Makes me smell delicious too.

Trimming it every two months supposedly makes hair grow faster too (never had faith in that though, but I didn't do it because I didn't care enough:lol:).

My hair is such a pain in the ass to wash and dry I do it once every week or two.

It's definitely true, split ends cause your hair to gradually shorten even as it grows. Whenever I've gotten my hair trimmed there was always a time in the proceeding months where it would get longer than it originally was.

oh not good news that it'll prolly get worse. That pic MisterMuscaria posted is fine though, not that curly really. My hairs about twice as thick, hopefully it'll weigh itself down more as it gets longer. I guess I should start asking female friends to straighten my hair. I'm going for long straight thick shiny hair that will make girls jealous!

Yeah. I think it wasn't really that I didn't have faith in it, it just took me so long to get it down to my chest (even had a haircut to make it shoulder length during my journey) that it would have felt like it would take longer.

ha, The pic I took after I got mine straightened got a comment from a girl saying mine was "prettier" than her's.

Iv had long hair plenty of times and I find if it's at a point where it looks bad, where a hat that works with the long hair an makes it look good.

Yah I wear a beanie any time I leave the house. I'm not joking I look absolutely ridiculous right now. I can't tie it up or do anything with it as it's not long enough and the bangs are just past my eyes so not long enough to go behind my ears and some other problems, hope it ends up being worth it!

I meant mine was really thick, not that his was thin! My head looks like a giant mushroom right now hahah. I might have to thin it out later but I'll look into that when it's longer. For now I want rid of the gay curls!

It's true my hair is nowhere near as thick as it was 5 years ago.
