Some questions regarding rye grain tech.
    #14551462 - 06/02/11 03:43 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've done a lot of reading and have found varied answers to many questions and it's left me somewhat confused, so I just want to go over the process. I was doing brf cakes before but have switched to rye grain now. My casing layer is 10 parts verm, 10 parts pete moss, and 1 part calcium carbonate and 1 part crushed oyster shells.

My first question is, how long should it take to colonize? I've read anywhere from a week to two weeks but it took our first 3/4th quart jars and the second batch of 1.5 quart jars more like two-three weeks, and the rye was very dry by this time. At first It seemed the temperature for incubation was too low, but after fixing this and having a constant 85 degree temperature, it remains the same.

I have a casing layer on the top and bottom, I've made it about an inch thick. My understanding is that it's good to cover up the first couple spots of mycellium with some more casing layer. I'm confused with flushing. My first casing was about 16" by 2" and the second is more like 2" by 3". Do I simply leave them in the fridge over night? Freezer? Do you actually 'dunk' it like a brf cake to rehydrate it? Do I apply more casing layer before/after the flush?

Sorry for the myriad of questions but I'm left confused and not sure where to look for the right answers.

85f is ten degrees too hot, and the casing layer goes on the top, not top and bottom.  You also don't cold shock tropical species.  It sounds like you've been reading some horribly bad info from the early days around here.  So much of that nonsense has been disproved.

Jebus. It's been hard trying to find thorough information, and going off a bit of everything that is not co-ordinated at all leads to huge misunderstandings. When you say 'You don't shock tropical species', are you implying that the rye grain technique is only for tropical species of psilocybin?

Placing them in the fridge will only slow growth. Don't cover up your casing layer because its purpose is to create a humid micro climate at the surface and hold a bit of moisture. "Cold Shock"

Some choose to reapply a casing layer after the first flush. All I do is give it ONE heavy misting, bump the heat up by 10 degrees and gradually return it to its normal fruiting conditions continuing misting by day 2.  I guess this can be called "heat shock".  I have nothing to backup that this causes great flushes but it does help create that warm humid air feeling after a rain shower.

u need to mix the grain with a substrate

normally poo, coir, verm

it looks like you mistook a casing layer with a substrate

people mix the spawn with a substrate and then when that is done colonizing they apply a casing layer to the top

well

not everybody uses a casing layer

i find them to be a pita so i never use them

The timing it takes to colonize depends on a lot of things, but it is highly dependent on your spawn ratio, moisture, and temperature. Like RR mentioned, 75F is plenty warm. You can get rid of the incubator.

I hope you are not trying to colonize the peat/verm++ with your grain...this is a non-nutritive casing layer meant NOT to feed mycelium.

Are you casing the grain without spawning to bulk? Is this a monotub?
Give us a bit more detail on your setup with pictures if you can...

As for reading a lot... good!, but be sure you check the dates of the posts involved and try to find the same information from multiple sources before considering it even potentially useful. My signature links might help clear some things up for you...

hope this is helpful
