Mushroom storage quick question

Hello i just got an ounce of shrooms and i want to preserve them as well as i can. I have cut them up a little and put them in a glass jar covered in tin foil and then i put that in the refrigerater. Do you think this is a good way to preserve potency??? And i just cut them up to help them fit in the jar better do you think that would mess with potency at all??? Thanks, i searched for this subject but found nothing on storing in fridge. i would use freezer but i don't want to risk mold if they are not completely dry.

There dry right? Just keep them in a dark cool place. If you throw a silica packet in there that will help keep moisture out

cool thanks yeah i just checked they are dry enough to break when i bend them. don't you only have to worry about shrooms going bad in freezers or is it just anything airtight and not dry?

You dont need a freezer, canning jars work great. I put them in a baggie and throw them in a jar witj silica or desiccant. Better to eat them up within 6 months

If they are really dry and kept chilled they will last way more than that. Had some recently 18 months old, still good.

I use one out of a peanut can, I am sure the beef jerky one would work.
It might even add a little flavor to the shrooms.

Sounds fine... Would caution cutting them up to much, less handling the better but should be fine

Get some of those damp rid small packs, or silica gel packs. I throw one in the jar i am putting the mushrooms bag in. I do not think they need to go in the fridge.

I agree, they do not need to go in the fridge but I find they are better if they do. There seems to be general agreement that there is a drop off in the active ingredients over time. I find little to no drop using cold storage. As a trial recently. 1.4 grams of 18 month old dried shrooms gave me some CEVs, body high, nice chill, about the same as when they were dried. The only complication with cold storage is the condensation on the glass container when they come out. To avoid this I take what I need quickly and put em back in.

thanks for the information. When you say cold storage do you mean refridgerater or freezer??? i just put a silica gel packet in the jar but just like you said when i take it out and open it i can see moisture on the inside. Is moisture a bigger threat than heat?

Yes the moisture can destroy them, they rot. To be really effective you need to heat the silica gel to dry it out otherwise it can already be saturated by humidity in the air. Microwave it till it's too hot to touch then use it before it has a chance to reabsorb water from the air. When I have used it it goes in still warm for best results.
If you have seen moisture on the inside then either the shrooms have not been completely dry or the moisture came in with the 'already full' silica gel. The silica should remove the humidity from the air in the container after sealing, although i don't use it all the time. I now compact them into the jar excluding air by filling the container with cracker dry shrooms. Small container are best for that reason. Small glass containers (small jam/jelly jars) with rubber sealed metal lids.
When you take the lid off you should not see any moisture inside or they have been degrading in the container.
Cold and dark conditions are better than warm to store almost anything in a closed container. Most chemical reactions like change in active ingredient will happen faster in warm conditions. I do not freeze mine but I am thinking about it next year. If I did I would put them in small zip top bags in about dose size to reduce hassle getting them out.

Yeah, just for that time period don't worry about the fridge. Only worth the effort for more than 6 months or so. But heating the silica gel is worth it anytime.
