Wow you guys are complaining about jobs that overpay and people who probably make more than you so you are butthurt. Not just @ you Shroom. I guess it just depends because most if not all the servers I have ever known are awsome people. I would never associate myself with a snooty person.
Bartenders however in my opinion are overpaid because they make hourly as well as tips.

Would you tip a best buy worker for telling you about a product, being nice, and getting one from the back for you?
Most people would not. Why is the food & beverage industry the only one that gets and EXPECTS tips?

I'm making more with a skilled job now. I didn't say servers weren't cool people. What does that have to do with what they should be paid? It's a cakewalk job. Compare it to a factory job where you sweat your ass off all day doing real work. Tipping is outdated. I don't blame those taking advantage of these loophole jobs when needed, I know I did. Just don't bitch about what you're making when you are clearly overpaid.

It is the same with servers here, they are overpaid. I agree that servers should get more that 2 bucks an hour, but the customers should not have to be directly responsible for making up for cheap businessmen. Also, mandatory tipping is bullshit. Call it a cover charge or service fee, but a tip is voluntary.

Not a good comparison, retail salesman work on commission so they're getting a percentage of your purchase which when added up is way more than minimum wage.

Best Buy workers don't make commission. They get hourly pay, but still get fired if they don't make enough black tie sales.

Best Buy might do that but what about others?

Yeah that isn't the norm, what kind of idiot would work a sales job for minimum wage?

And if you dont want to tip thats fine. But do not go out to a place that you know is going to have a person serve you that makes 2 bucks an hour and say its not my responsibility to tip. It would be like endorsing a sweatshop.

Hey the guy made a metaphor about Best Buy. I'm just pointing out the validity of that very specific metaphor.

Yeah if you don't want to tip, come to Oregon where servers make $8.50 an hour without tips. Really all of your states/countries should just raise the serving minimum wage to match the actual minimum wage. Then tip big when they actually deserve it and don't fear retribution for smaller tips.

Okay they get an hourly pay but surely it's not at the minimum wage rate so it still wasn't a good analogy.

Nope, at least the Best Buys around here pay minimum wage.

Minimum wage rules equally apply to everyone where i live including servers.
It seems that the problem is more that servers make below minimum wage in some places more than servers don't get enough tips.
Seriously though, what's the reason for food&beverage to get tips and no one else?
I suspect it has something to do with guys trying to be "the big man" in front of others while eating out and it stuck.
