PF Tek Shotgun Terrarium
    #14551437 - 06/02/11 03:38 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys. Psilocybe Ovoideocystidiata season is over where I live and as my first time wildly looking for a patch, I found one. This has really opened my eyes to the spiritual and enetheogic use of mushrooms and has inspired my to invest my paycheck into PF Tek. I'm waiting on my spore syringe from The hawk's eye now and received the e mail that indicated it should be here in 3-4 days. As ancy and anxious as i am, I am already preparing everything for when it arrives. I just had a few questions about my shotgun terrarium. Too small? Too many holes? Too few holes? Any comments on a first time grower, feel free to include  --- and I had a question about the substrate. Using brown rice flour+verm+water. Was wondering after i prepared the substrate and boiled it for 90 mins in the pot to sterilize if i'd be in trouble to transport my jars 3 minutes away to a different house to inoculate? would that cause the jars to be unsterile?

Your terrarium looks like it should work. After you boil the jars, you need to let them sit over night to cool. If you do not wait for them to cool, the heat will kill your spores.

Good luck!

How deep is that tub?? Because you have to remember you need about 4 inches of perlight in there for the Shotgun to work properly. Not saying it won't work just saying you might have to re-hydrate the perlight in the middle of fruiting.
As for your question: if you let the jars cool for a half an hour or so and transport them in the pressure cooker with the lid on tight then you should be fine.

I'm not sure I would have put the perlite in just yet. I wouldn't add

water to it until you are ready to use it. "I" think you should have gone

with a deeper tub. You're not going to have much room for your mushrooms

to grow in height. But, they can conform, they will usually bend but its

best to have a deeper tub for that purpose. The only problem I can see is

if you get a monster and  have no room for it to grow.

Not too shabby.

I think you'll be alright with it, and if you do get a monster it'll probably just buckle over with the rest of em.

Just hope it grows from one of the sides, lol.

The tub i'm using is 26 1/8" x 18 3/8" x 6 3/8" which 6 3/8" which i believe to be the height. too short? and check my pic above with perilite. Since the tub is kind of long do you think the 8qt distributed enough to where im good height wise on the perilite?

The perlite should be fine. Since its a pretty small container, it should

hold humidity pretty well.

I'm not a huge expert when it comes to the PF tek (i jumped right to rye berries), but I do know if you cut mycelium, it has to recover.  That of course uses up precious mushroom energy.

I've cut cakes in half before, it worked well. What I did, is I cut them

in half length wise, so they are half round, then I dunked and birthed. I

just layed them on the flat side. Like I said, it worked pretty well.

Normally u need 4 inches of perlite. Maybe because its shorter u might not need as deep. You definitely need more holes in your fc. They need to be 2" apart and on all six sides.

Okay, I think I have found the solution for this FC. What would happen if I laid the cakes longwise instead of straight up on aluminum foil? What would it hurt? I mean the cake laying sideways?

and how about perilite? think im fine for a smaller FC? Its an 8 qt bag.

I've never heard anything for or against this idea, but I don't see why it would be a problem.

From what I (know) mushrooms will grow towards the light, like most other things.

Since they don't use the light's energy for food, they CAN and WILL grow without it, but it's just a guide since we want them to grow up for easy pickins.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well I already bought 2 6500k CFL lights for the 12/12 cycle. I need to know if laying my cakes longways will stunt anything.

Well if you lay them down your going to lose more surface area for mushrooms to grow on then if you had the standing up like their suppose to. Just something to think about.

If you cut them, they will work fine! I usually got 35 grams wet off one

half. Just cut them like this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/603595/page/5

That was a long time ago, I just cut them in half rinsed them off, then I

filled the jar that they were in with cold water, put the lid on, and put

them in the fridge for 12-24hrs. Took them out, didn't even roll them,

and I put them straight to the perlite and I was still getting 30+ grams

wet off one half. So Its works, and if I was in your spot, thats

probably what I'd do.

I'm currently using the shotgun tek, although I do have a question. What is the point of drilling holes in the bottom? Is it truly beneficial? It seems that it would just make a huge mess and the perlite and moisture would come through the bottom of it, and the perlite would be covering the holes anyway. Can someone please help me out with this? I'm having a dilemma over it. Thanks so much
