When I was a server I made 2.50 an hour and my when taxes came out of my check it included the tips I had made for 2 weeks. So my paychecks were like 40 bucks.
Lame. I am not opposed to tipping. I wont tip if the server is shit but if I am drinking and having a good time and the server jokes around and chats and brings beers before I am empty, then I will tip big.

Poverty line? No way, that is good pay. People do hard work in construction for that much money, serving is hard work and they do deserve tips. In my experience, most (including myself) were overpaid. To this day, serving is the highest paid job I have ever had.

I tip huge, sometimes up to 50% if I was served well and I do get ridiculously good service everywhere I go because of that.

$14 an hour is doing pretty good where I live.
Fuck money.

Some people never tip, but say they do....just like recycling. They never do though.
I bet I could save over $200 a year.
If you would only save 200 a year your tips are probably so small that whoever gets this doesn't care whether you leave it or not. If a job deserves a tip, tip well. If you don't think it deserves a tip don't tip at all. no use leaving a shitty tip when you could save your money and hopefully send a message for better service in the future.

20/hr was the norm for my wife, but she worked at a place that served alcohol. As a pizza driver I would net about 15 as well, counting higher costs and min. wage.
I now live in a state where servers make min wage at $8/hr! I think they still expect and get 20% though, they can make crazy money.

yeah but the cost of living in WA state is much higher than a lot of other places. Usually I average around $20-$25/hr, but that doesn't leave me with that much free cash. Most of the servers in my bar work 2 jobs serving because they can't live off the $$ they make, and they get paid $8.50/hr
honestly I'm going to get another job bar tending once my arm heals because I can't support myself on the wage I make

Just tip, don't be an asshole.
No one wants to spend their life serving and if someone who does is nice to you despite having a sucky job I think not tipping is a very bitch move. It's not about how much money the guy/girl makes, it's about showing gratitude and it's always nice to live in a nice warm environment. Even if I knew that the guy serving was a millionaire (hypothetically speaking) I'd tip if the service was good.
It's a way of supporting nice human interactions.

I mean, it's whatever. You don't have to tip when you go out. But they will remember your face and your dining choices will become limited to taco bell and the like.

Maybe it varies by state but here they automatically add a 18% tip to the bill then I usually double it on top of that.

It all balances out. Some leave more than enough while tipping, some leave an average amount, some don't tip enough, and some don't tip at all.

It's all very zen that way.
I was just playing devil's advocate in this thread BTW.
I tip very well unless the server sucks.
Only one time a server has sucked so bad that I left no tip. But when I'm sitting with an empty plate and an empty glass- still fucking starving BTW- for 30+ minutes when the place is dead empty, why the fuck am I gonna tip you? It honestly made me hate this Mexican joint that I used to love!

If you don't like to tip you should just make your own food at home. Generally It's Better tasting, you actually know how it was made/who made it, the nutritional content/ingredients of the food and you don't have to deal with the hassle of going out of your way and waiting for some underportioned overpriced meal. Plus cooking is a good skill and can be therapuetic.
Then again i've never been a huge going out to eat kind of person. Especially bars, fuck bars. $4 for one shitty bud light, wtf?

Bro I don't know where you worked but I've NEVER heard of dishwashers getting a portion of the tip. Maybe I was getting dicked.

it's part of the fun...you can get a 12 pack and get wasted at home for $10, or you and your buddies could go out, spend $150 and have an awesome time
