10 days no pinning, growing in a suitcase! (pics)
    #14550478 - 06/02/11 11:39 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello.  I have two, covered tubs fruiting within a suitcase.  The tubs consist of colonized WBS bags spawned straight to coir.  They are fruiting under 12/12 fluorescent light.  The room temp is 74 degrees with a humidity of 90%.  I remove the lids twice a day to fan.  I have not misted as there was a slight buildup of water on the substrate surface, which is now dissipating after consistent fanning.  It has been 10 days and I have no signs of pins.

There are, however, large white "balls" of mycelium and other "finger-like" projections coming from the surface in some areas.  Initially, I thought they were pins, but I have yet to see any caps. I started fruiting a little early as there are small spots of visible brown coir in some areas.  These small spots did not seem to want to colonize after 2 1/2 weeks, so I fruited anyways.  I had a similar situation with my first coir grow, and my yields turned out extremely well.  My only concern is that last time, pinning took only 5-7 days.

Some questions...

Should I remove the lids on the tubs?
-I was going to wait until I saw signs of pinning, in hopes of keeping the humidity high.  I do, however, need to remove them eventually, as the closed tubs are not nearly large enough for fruits to develop.

Should I start misting now that some of the water has evaporated?
-I did not mist at first because I was afraid a buildup would promote bacterial growth and subsequent metabolite secretion.  This already happened in the bottom of the tubs (I dumped the standing water out out the tubs).

I would appreciate any input.  Thank you!

Muhahahaha

I live with people who would not be fly with this operation, and this is the best method I could think of to hide my setup.  I sterilized the suitcase anyways, so what's the problem?

If anyone has any intelligent input I would greatly appreciate it!  Thank you!

How are you getting any fresh air in there, to trigger pinning your gunna need some fresh air exchange

3rd picture, trich on the back right of the substrate.

You're not getting enough FAE in that suitcase w/ those tubs...I see no poly holes or anything.

If you live w/ people not down w/ the mushis, then move out. you're asking for jail time by doing it around people that'll rat you out.

Ditch your efforts for now, read more & once you finally move out, start over w/ a proper set up.

Thanks todlow & puff4200.

I have been fanning at least twice a day for FAE, but I suppose that is not enough since I have contamination.  Strange because I did the same thing on my first grow in a monotub and it worked fine.  And this was without any holes in the tub.

Any chance I could bury the non-contaminated tub outside and see some results?

FYI, the elders I live with would surely not rat me out.  They would probably have no idea what it was if they saw it now.  They might make me go to therapy or do something stupid though :P

How high are your temps? You need to be around mid 70s. Plus yes, lots of

fresh air, thats why we mist, because the FAE will dry out the surface.

If you are getting bacteria, that usually means you have to much humidity

at to high temps. Or you didn't pasteurize your substrate correctly.

I would say at the very least get rid of the one with contam and see if that frees up enough room around the other tub to have at least a little air flow when you have the bag unziped and open...

The temp was 74 degrees.  I imagine it got too humid inside there because I was not around to provide adequate FAE to compensate for not having any "poly-fill" holes.  I fanned twice a day, though.  Morning and night.

As far as pasteurizing goes, I dumped 4 quarts of boiling hot water over 1 brick of coir and squeezed out the extra water using my sanitized hands.  Perhaps I need to make a glove box.

I ended up spraying the trich with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia in order to raise the pH in hopes of stalling trich's growth.  I have not seen any more green spots since (~24 hours). I just soaked it in water overnight and placed it outside, adding a coir casing layer to keep a little moisture in.  I'll update with pics accordingly, should there be any results.

I'm not too disappointed seeing how it's only my second attempt at growing.  I do thank everyone for their help.  Hopefully I get a few mushies that taste good enough.  After all, I'm growing Shitake

If you're growing shitake I'm Bill Gates....

shitake need a cold shock to fruit, don't like WBS or coir, etc.

If you want help, then don't lie to us.

The only thing you could've done to stall out that trich was make a salt paste & cover it.

why would you soak a bulk substrate overnight, especially one w/ trich? it's overhydrated now...

Rule of thumb w/ mushis concerning trich: if it's green take it outside immediately. Wash all your walls w/ a bleach+water @ 1:9 ratio. Wash all your clothes & take a shower.

Green mean it's already spored...which means it's all over your suitcase, which you're keeping your tubs in.

First and foremost, I appreciate your feedback, todlow.

I did not intend to lie, I meant it more as a sarcastic statement.  I figured you knew my situation... Why else would I come to this specific website and forum?

As far as the actual tubs go...

I sterilized the outside of the uncontaminated tub and moved it out of the suitcase into a larger bin with polyfilled holes to increase FAE.  Hopefully it produces some fruits before the spores take over, lol.

I had soaked the contaminated tub (outside) overnight because it started to shrivel up and had shrunk in size.  I understand your comment about spreading the trich, and I realize that soaking might have been a mistake.  But hey, it's contaminated anyways, so what do I have to lose?

After all, I'm new to this forum and this hobby.  Everything is a learning process at some point in time.

ok. I figured you were being sarcastic, it just hit me wrong especially when it's the first thing I read before I got my :coffee: in me.

No reason to dunk anything you're tossing outside. You can water it or just let the rain do the job.

The less you mess w/ a contaminated substrate the better off you'll be in the long run.

Make sure your good tub is getting adequate FAE, cuz if not you're going to be fighting w/ the green again.

Hah no problem

Still no pins after almost another 4 days.  The temp in my new tub is 76 and humidity 95%.  There are 6 poly-filled holes for increased FAE, and I am fanning 3x a day or more.  There are no signs of contaminants other than very small metabolite secretions which have been there for a couple days.  Is there anything else I can do to initiate pinning?  I'm pretty stumped at this point.

Mist them a little bit before fanning...that should help....

that light is 6500K, right? It's been awhile since I've checked on this thread.

Hm, it's 4200K.  I had great success with it on my last grow, though.  I'll try to increase misting in the meantime...  Thanks.

yeah, TL is right about the light. His recommendation to mist a little before fanning is more important though.

I have to give Jappleseed props for suitcase idea, aside the flaw in FAE design. I see great things coming from you once you have a place of your own and room to experiment. I also agree with TL on growing under a non-approving roof. Cheers.
