I'm eating lobster at Red Lobster and not going to tip anymore.
Some people never tip, but say they do....just like recycling. They never do though.
I bet I could save over $200 a year.

Hopefully you don't keep going to the same Red Lobster, or you're going to get spit in your butter sauce.

That's a dick thing to do, and servers are not overpaid.
When times have been hard in the past I've fallen back on serving in fine-dining joints and bartending at a nightclub. I made 2.13 an hour, +tips.
Granted, I usually walked out with 50% of my sales dollars in tips, so I was pretty well-off for a young person. All of my bills were paid, and I had some money left to play with.

servers are paid 2.50 an hour.
if you don't tip we don't pay the bills.
Of course there was this same exact thread a few months ago, but I can assure you it's a bitch move to not tip. Try being a server and see how easy it is. In restaurants like the one I work in, where there aren't servers assistants and you are responsible for greeting, seating, watering, learning about and informing the costumers on the nightly special, being knowledgeable on wine and serving it in the proper way, running food and collecting money, all the while being polite, helpful and graceful in your movements/not dropping food or breaking shit. It is real physical work.
don't be a douche, tip your server or eat at home.

Sounds like you were well paid after all.
Servers are among the most highly paid of all entry level workers. I was a server and a pizza driver for years, I made much more than I deserved and I liked it, but I know I didn't deserve it. I was overpaid.

That's why you open a tab so you can not tip at the very end.

Darden restaurants just started a new tip sharing process so servers are giving more to busboys and it's actually mandated. They still make plenty of money though, and I tip depending on service but I'm never a dick about it I always leave something.

ya that last thread a couple months back was pretty fucking lame... I'm a bartender, so i make my living off of tips. If you don't want to tip me that's fine but if I see you back in my bar you're not gonna get good service.
if you can afford to go out, you can afford to give me $1 to make your drink. If you choose not to because you feel like I don't deserve it, then I'll stiff you on your next one...
what goes around comes around
edit: although i do agree that tips are conditional based on service. If i get really bad service, my tip reflects that. That's a tool for the servers though, because if they see a small tip it might make them think "maybe my service was bad" as opposed to not tipping which leaves the server thinking "wow that cheap fuck didn't even tip me..."

depends where you live. in my state servers are paid at least $8.50 an hour. minimum wage is the same for all jobs here. which makes being a server an awesome job rather than a shitty job. i don't care when people don't tip here. its not like they deserve tips any more than any other minimum wage job in this state.

When I was a server I made 2.50 an hour and my when taxes came out of my check it included the tips I had made for 2 weeks. So my paychecks were like 40 bucks.
Lame. I am not opposed to tipping. I wont tip if the server is shit but if I am drinking and having a good time and the server jokes around and chats and brings beers before I am empty, then I will tip big.

If you would only save 200 a year your tips are probably so small that whoever gets this doesn't care whether you leave it or not. If a job deserves a tip, tip well. If you don't think it deserves a tip don't tip at all. no use leaving a shitty tip when you could save your money and hopefully send a message for better service in the future.

20/hr was the norm for my wife, but she worked at a place that served alcohol. As a pizza driver I would net about 15 as well, counting higher costs and min. wage.
I now live in a state where servers make min wage at $8/hr! I think they still expect and get 20% though, they can make crazy money.

yeah but the cost of living in WA state is much higher than a lot of other places. Usually I average around $20-$25/hr, but that doesn't leave me with that much free cash. Most of the servers in my bar work 2 jobs serving because they can't live off the $$ they make, and they get paid $8.50/hr
honestly I'm going to get another job bar tending once my arm heals because I can't support myself on the wage I make

Just tip, don't be an asshole.
No one wants to spend their life serving and if someone who does is nice to you despite having a sucky job I think not tipping is a very bitch move. It's not about how much money the guy/girl makes, it's about showing gratitude and it's always nice to live in a nice warm environment. Even if I knew that the guy serving was a millionaire (hypothetically speaking) I'd tip if the service was good.
It's a way of supporting nice human interactions.

It's all very zen that way.
I was just playing devil's advocate in this thread BTW.
I tip very well unless the server sucks.
Only one time a server has sucked so bad that I left no tip. But when I'm sitting with an empty plate and an empty glass- still fucking starving BTW- for 30+ minutes when the place is dead empty, why the fuck am I gonna tip you? It honestly made me hate this Mexican joint that I used to love!

If you don't like to tip you should just make your own food at home. Generally It's Better tasting, you actually know how it was made/who made it, the nutritional content/ingredients of the food and you don't have to deal with the hassle of going out of your way and waiting for some underportioned overpriced meal. Plus cooking is a good skill and can be therapuetic.
Then again i've never been a huge going out to eat kind of person. Especially bars, fuck bars. $4 for one shitty bud light, wtf?

This is where different personality types come into play. Generally i'd just prefer hanging out at a buddies/girlfriends house with the $10 twelve pack and relax in a chill comfy environment. Save my $140 and use it for my groceries budget with stuff that I will enjoy and actually nourish my body instead with stuff like steak, chicken breasts, and seafood.

I'll tip when the service is good. I get pissed when I see a tip jar everywhere I go though. Sometimes I get pizza from Papa Murphy's and those kids get all butt hurt when I don't drop a few bucks in their jar. It's a take and bake. They don't even fuckin' cook it.

If we're playing that game, why not get your food at the grocery store or even better your farmers market therefore saving even more money than just not tipping.

Why don't all my customers make their own furniture and assemble their own appliances? They would save more money.

Cooking is much less of a skill than carpentry. Plus if you only make 3-8 dollars an hour as a craftsman I'd raise my prices.

Do servers cook? I would gladly tip the cooks if it was acceptable.

I'm pretty sure servers only get minimum wage other than the tips. They deserve to get paid more than that don't you think? I'm sure you wouldn't want to live off minimum wage.

I'm just saying as long as servers are making min. wage where I eat and they do. I don't feel the need to give them extra money for doing nothing of skill. There are so many services that I believe should be tipped over servers. The cooks being one.

I tip, but think the practice is kind of dumb.
Just pay the servers more and be done with it. It doesn't make sense why some professions get tips, and others do not.

Seems like most of the people that defend tipping are the ones who get tips. I still tip even though I cannot stand it. I do it out of fear of them remembering me and spitting in my food though, not out of good service.

I delivered pizzas for about three years. A slow night was $10-11 per hour and a good night was $25-30 per hour. That was 10 years ago too. It was the best job I ever had. Drive around get high and listen to good tunes. Also much better than serving because you only see the customer for about 30 seconds.

Well... If you don't like the people, the service industry isn't really for you.
People work retail for peanuts, have to deal with rich assholes who go to malls (many other kinds of assholes too), and they don't get tipped at all.

Most jobs require you to deal with people. A serving position is one of the best jobs you can grab. One you can support yourself on if you do not have a degree or whatever. If you cant throw someone a few bucks when they serve your food for you that is outrageous to me. You seriously see the worst of the worst in that industry as far as the general public is concerned.

Mandatory tipping in the food & beverage industry is a silly modern social construct.
There are people who work service everywhere, yet they don't expect tips.
Waiters/bartenders are spoiled and self-entitled.
Waiting or bar tending is an easy job. There are plenty of service jobs that are harder that get no tips.
Back in the day you would tip ANYONE who gave you above average service in hopes of good service in the future.
Now we have snot-nosed brat waiters who look DOWN on you if you don't for no reason other than an overinflated sense of self-entitlement.
Face it waiters; you took the job because you knew it was way more slack when tips are included compared to other service jobs of that pay grade.

I don't know how I even found this thread and got reeled into it. Let me say I was a pizza delivery driver for years and have known multiple waiters. ALL of these jobs are beyond overpaid.I was making at least $20/hr take home. Servers and drivers are loophole jobs, without a doubt. Ask yourself this, if we one day just stopped tipping and had the owners adjust the wages for drives/servers, would they be making $15-$25 after taxes? HELL NO!!! Try slightly above min. wage. Get real people. I never ever got upset at someone not tipping me when I was a driver, because I knew it would even out and realized I was way overpaid. That being said, I still tip, but I don't think it has to be 15 or 20%, try 5 or 10%-plenty.

Wow you guys are complaining about jobs that overpay and people who probably make more than you so you are butthurt. Not just @ you Shroom. I guess it just depends because most if not all the servers I have ever known are awsome people. I would never associate myself with a snooty person.
Bartenders however in my opinion are overpaid because they make hourly as well as tips.

I'm making more with a skilled job now. I didn't say servers weren't cool people. What does that have to do with what they should be paid? It's a cakewalk job. Compare it to a factory job where you sweat your ass off all day doing real work. Tipping is outdated. I don't blame those taking advantage of these loophole jobs when needed, I know I did. Just don't bitch about what you're making when you are clearly overpaid.

It is the same with servers here, they are overpaid. I agree that servers should get more that 2 bucks an hour, but the customers should not have to be directly responsible for making up for cheap businessmen. Also, mandatory tipping is bullshit. Call it a cover charge or service fee, but a tip is voluntary.

Not a good comparison, retail salesman work on commission so they're getting a percentage of your purchase which when added up is way more than minimum wage.

Best Buy workers don't make commission. They get hourly pay, but still get fired if they don't make enough black tie sales.

Yeah if you don't want to tip, come to Oregon where servers make $8.50 an hour without tips. Really all of your states/countries should just raise the serving minimum wage to match the actual minimum wage. Then tip big when they actually deserve it and don't fear retribution for smaller tips.

Minimum wage rules equally apply to everyone where i live including servers.
It seems that the problem is more that servers make below minimum wage in some places more than servers don't get enough tips.
Seriously though, what's the reason for food&beverage to get tips and no one else?
I suspect it has something to do with guys trying to be "the big man" in front of others while eating out and it stuck.
