When I was in Japan they had A/C's that where mounted above the window/patio door. All they had where a small duct that when trough the wall (about 1-3" big. Fairly quiet and cooled nicely, not sure about availably in US though.

O shit mini split. I dun put a few in and forgot about them. They are a bit pricey but you can get one outdoor unit and hook a couple indoor units in different rooms up to them.
They are very expensive compared to a window shaker or sliding a wall unit in through wall but way quiet.

In my experience, at least with pits. You want to keep them either chained up away from everyone and only you, ur husband, and ur kids feed it. It will hate everyone else. Or, u can keep it in the house and put the dog up whenever company comes. The point being is that it will only like u and ur immediate family and despise everyone else. It sounds unusual but the best guard dogs don't like strangers. By isolating the dogs interactions, you create a better watch dog. That's why junk yard dogs are so good and aggressive with strangers. Cheers, nice dog u got there!

Most "Box" AC's are securely mountable.
Ever notice how the cord always comes out of the plastic and the controls are on a separate bit of plastic to the front piece?
Normally you can take the front cover off by unclipping a few of the plastic tabs that hold the front onto the metal. It should just lift away from the unit. You should now have access to screw the AC into the frame of the window, there might even be holes provided for you to use!
If you can't get a drill/screwdriver into the right position you should be able to slide the whole AC unit out of the metal box it's in (You unplugged it right?) to get better access to it.
