The Search for Ovoids: Part 1
#14546402 - 06/01/11 03:37 PM (12 years, 8 months ago) |

After a couple of days with nominal amounts of rain, I decided to take a bike ride along the South Branch of the Raritan River. This trip ended up consisting of ~80% walking and riding my bike, due to my need to get lost every once in a while ; ).
Habitat: all finds in floodplain, near river. Hardwoods.
1. Boletus bicolor (?)
Apparently there are a few species that look similar, so I'm not too sure. Notice the blue staining on the stem in the second picture (unless you don't want to).

2. Cortinarius speciosissimus, I believe (deadly!)
Cortina. Finely hairy, umbonate cap. (What I believe to be) universal veil remnants (See smaller mushroom in picture 2).

3. Clathrus archeri
You can see the appetizing mucus glob near the egg.

4. Polyporus arcularius
I discovered a "super macro" button on my camera, soon realizing that you have to have an unnaturally steady hand to take crisp pictures. The second photo was the only successful photo in this trying mode.

Does anyone know what plant this is? When my arm or leg brushes against it, it causes a pain similar to a bee sting for ~10 minutes.

5. Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata : ]
I was pretty much ready to move on to the next park when I heard a deer jump into the water and ford the river. Interested, I moved closer to the waterline, almost stepping on two of these.

Habitat

In total I found 1.5 caps and 1 stem >.>. They're bruising quite a bit more than the ones I found the other day though : D (and they're quite a bit closer to home).

Your IDs look good. The plant is stinging nettle.

The plant you are wondering about is a stinging nettle. Top side of the leaf wont sting you but every other part of it will. I've never done it myself but you can make tea's or capsules from them for their health benefits.

I'm surprised how fresh that ovoid looks this late in the season, what are the temps where it is growing?

The tea is delicious, and great for treating symptoms of common colds. My favorite use is steaming or boling it like spinach and eating it. Very similar in nutrition and taste to spinach. A little apple cider vinegar on top and your golden!

It's been in the high 80's for about a week - I was surprised I found some too. Maybe I'll try making tea out of the nettle. Hmm, any tips on avoiding getting stung when handling/cooking (maybe I'll bring gardening gloves, as if crouching in the bushes looking for mushrooms isn't suspicious enough ^^).

Congrats on the find!! Yea, gardening gloves will definitely do the trick for the stings.

Oh, about how maybe ovoids does it take for a light trip, and how many for a heavy trip? (I'm one of those poor souls without a digital scale )
*Edit hmm found a thread that said around 10-13 is "perfect". Does that sound about right?

Hot water deactivates them.

Nice find, we don't often see deadly Cortinarius in the USA. It would be interesting to see if it glows under a black light, as the deadly toxin is fluorescent.

No, that's highly dependent on size. Post a pic next to a size reference and we'll play the guessing game. It also matters if they were sun dried or fresh.
Scales are cheap.

Hmm I was doing the parts as m - n, where m started at 0 and incremented by 1, and n was unknown (until a few days ago), and represents the number of hunts from m=0 that it would take to find ovoids. Erm, it's like trying to figure out what year you are in before Jesus was born.
Now that I have found ovoids, the parts are definite, and > 0. I felt lazy and didn't feel like posting part 1.
