Trichoderma showing off after introducing light and FAE to my monotub
    #14549464 - 06/02/11 05:26 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

:frown:

I don't get it. I've waited for the monotub to colonize 100% (wbs + coco coir). It took 10 days, and when I started to introduce light and FAE I noticed trichoderma in two spots at day 4.

It hasn't turned green yet though. Is there at least a slight possibility to save my monotub? For example giving more FAE and cutting off the contaminated spots?

I'll show you pictures soon in 30 minutes. Please help.

Bad spawn, most likely. Hidden contams in your spawn jars.
How are you shooting them up?

best advice.....hope it fruits before it turns green:lol:I've tried everything I can think of, it's terminal. You can cut it out, put a salt or baking soda paste on it or whatever, but that will only buy you a couple of extra days. You spawn was bad:sad:

Yeah, I inoculated with Grain LC...

I have 2 more monotubs which are almost colonized. So I should except them to fail too?

Btw, I did a test brf cake with the same Grain LC and it was successful.

If your test jar was good, your other 2 bulks may make it. It must have been infected during spawning, or your pasteurization was a no-go. Have you fruited the pf cake?

Yep, brf cake was fruited well. All the wbs jars looked good too, which I used to make monotubs. All the monotubs colonized well too.

Btw, now I'm thinking maybe the direct sunlight did something to the mycelium in the monotub. I MIGHT have forgotten it into my room, where sunlight could weaken the mycelium. I've read that direct sunlight is bad for more than 10 minutes.

Other tubs may or may not be ok. It's possible to have a subtle contam in GLC, though less common than with regular LC.
You can't save that tub though.

Please tell me, could it happen because of the sunlight?

not unless they dried out, or got hotter than 106f. my f/c is right beside a 250w HPS and they do just great. My jars are right there too

Could sunlight cause one species of fungus to turn into another species of fungus?
Is that seriously what you are asking?

Bad spawn.

Okay.. thanks. I cut out the spots and sprayed with salt water though. Maybe miracle will happen.

Thank you for your replies.

When bulk substrate's are contaminated when you open to birth or before the first flush, your spawn or pasteurization is/was bad.

No, more like - could sunlight weaken the mycelium and make it more vurnable to contaminations. I've read that fully colonized mycelium rarely get contaminated.

I didn't use the protecting layer of coir on top of the substrate and grains are pretty much exposed. So I thought when I opened the lid to make a picture after the substrate was colonized, some bad spores could land on the grains and so on..

spraying your sub with saltwater=terrible idea. It's too alkiline and hurts the myc. Next time, take a tablespoon of salt, add a couple drops of water and put it only on the trich. It's a poultice

I hope it was pasteurization. The pasteurization proccess in "My Elementary Coir Tek" feels a bit weird to me (which I have been using), because when I pour the boiled water in, some of the coir will still be dry in the end. I couldn't mix it up very well with water and the vermiculite.

HARDLY, ambient light is beneficial for colonizing mycelium.

If anything causes trich to germinate it's going to be a still-air environment and bad sterile procedure.  Another point, if your substrate was over 4 inches thick, anaerobic environments in the center of the substrate will be created.

Without the frosting of coir, it's possible that your grains dried out and invader spores were able to get a foot-holding there.
