growing cubes outdoors?
    #14548566 - 06/01/11 11:08 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

i want to experiment with outdoor cultivation and i was wondering if anyone had any advice or links to good teks. i have no experience with outdoor cultivation so any info would be helpful.

my idea was to take a colonized jar of rye add it to some substrate (most likely coir and coffee grounds) and let it colonize. after it colonized i was thinking of cutting up a small square of sod in my back yard in a place that gets a lot of moisture, digging a hole and filling it with either substrate or manure. then mix in the colonize substrate and cover it up with the sod sort of like a grassy casing layer. i was then going to water daily to maintain high moisture and see what happens. mushrooms do grow in my back yard so i figure the climate is right and the humidity levels are adequate.

here's a couple

Hamloaf's contaminated to outdoor cubes
Hamloaf's contaminated bag experiments

I know M11 is also interested in outdoor patches, so you can search for posts by him. While you are at it, advance search for "outdoor grows" with images IMO

There's also a recent one in Costa Rica with an old car shell for a shade provider... it's awesome, but I forget the username

that will work

I recently have done an outdoor grow with a plain jar of wbs added to some shit soil, and some colonized coir put into a nice dug up hole.
Both results were great.
Just water it and keep an eye out for them little buggers. they look so damn cool growing outside!

Goodluck.

Still getting nice fruits off both of the patches and its been going for a few weeks now.

cool. thanks. i skimmed through those two links they seem pretty interesting. i noticed both used contaminated or spent substrate, using fresh, uncontaminated subs shouldn't make any difference besides better chances of success correct?

my only concern with my plan was that the sod "casing layer" might be too thick for the myc to get through. anyone think that might be a problem?

np dude

Hypothetically, yes, you should have higher chances of success with an uncontaminated substrate, but it really depends on the environmental conditions in your region and how you "alter" them in the actual place you try growing.

If you plan on having clean spawn anyway and want the best chances of success, you may as well make a substrate & fruiting chamber IMO.

How would i Go about "altering" the environmental conditions?

i understand a fruiting chamber would be a better option but im just trying to do something different and see if it works, im not really sweating it if i loose one colonized jar i kinda just wanna see some cubes growing in my grass.

by the way i live in NY, i've heard that Cubes dont naturally grow in the wild around here, does anyone know why?

This thread sucks.

Use the search function.

Growing outdoors is as easy as 1 2 3... Make up some jars. dig a hole. put spawn in that hole.

Take care of it and your good money. I am also from the north east and have no problems growing outside.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6752115/page/1

i've grown alot of shrooms outdoors, both edibles and actives.  it's very easy, much easier than fruiting indoors in my opinion.  just chunk up some fresh or spent colonized substrate, mix it with moistened straw and manure (either pasteurized or not, don't matter), place in a hole under some plants/shade cloth or other sun protecting device and keep moist.  it takes about 4 weeks for me usually when the weather is 50's-100's. the most important thing to watch is moisture and humidity, keep both high but don't overwater to the point of water-logging your substrate.  peace

Growing outdoors is fantastic.  It works surprisingly well.  I like to spawn to shoe box sized tubs, let them colonize/consolidate, then fruit the blocks outdoors.  I like to cover the trays/blocks with some grass clippings and such. I am expanding on last summers outdoor project.  I just finished my PCing.

Check my signature link if you are interested.

nice job with the grow in that link, that's exactly the kind of simple procedure i was looking for.

Oh wow I just checked out M11's outdoor and I am majorly dissappointed as I had two tobs that had cobweb and just yesterday took them out to my compost heap.... what a bummer... I burried them in the compost and turned it over a few times.... wish I had seen this a day sooner...

And I believe where someone talks about changing atmosphere they are probably talking about having some clear tubs turned upside down in your yard to keep humidity high...

i took a small jar of colonized rye and added it to manure from home depot that i had lying around for gardening at a ratio of about 1/2, i was going for equal parts of both manure and colonized rye but i messed up the ratio a little bit. it should also be noted that i did not pasteurize or attempt to sterilize the manure in any way i just grabbed some out of the bag.

anyway this is how it looks about 3 days later

i plan on digging a hole under a bush in my backyard right nest to a tree in a very shady area. filling the hole with more manure, and the colonized substrate after it reaches 100%, covering the top with more manure, leaves and woodchips. then watering daily and hoping for the best

should i mix hydrated vermiculite and maybe some perlite in with the manure for filling in the patch in order to keep up the moisture content of would that negatively effect the mycelium growth?

Colonize your spawn.
Dig a hole.
Fill this hole most of the way with cow shit.
Mix in your spawn.
Provide shade.
Provide water.
Pick mushrooms.
Trip hard.

Not to threadjack, but couldn't you just noc up some doody?
Higher risk of contams, but it's possible right?

I think I'm gonna have to visit a local farmer soon and inquire about their compost heaps.

Grab some shit and a shovel, and fuckin tear shit up.

I did.  Me and everyone else I gave a piece of that harvest to (a few of them may or may not be members).  Ambargh also agrees with that notation in that thread.

I have a question about outdoor growing:

Would you need to bother with burying more than one cake if you were using horse poo? Because wouldn't the mycelium spread from the cake and colonize the horse poo?

The more spawn the better.  Higher spawn ratios reduce colonization and therefore fruiting times.
