Differentiating between the Panaeolus species
    #14548175 - 06/01/11 09:42 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hi everyone. I have experience finding and identifying P. cubensis and there's no trouble there because cubensis are fairly distinctive, but I've been researching the Paneaeolus species that grow here in Florida and from the pictures they all look very similar. I recognize them from the fields I've been in but I can't seem to make clear distinctions.

What are the main features I should be looking for to differentiate between cinctulus, cyanescens, and antillarum?

I see that antillarum is usually white/light, but there are pictures of darker antillarum that look just like the other two species. Likewise, there are pictures of the other two species that are nearly white and extremely similar to an antillarum.

Also a rule question for these forums. I'm going to go hunting in the next couple days. Could I reuse this topic if I have any trouble identifying any of the previous species?

Panaeolus cyanescens bruises blue a lot and has a yellowish circle on the cap.

^this.

also, pan. ants will bruise tannish to light brown and pan. paps. are easily distinguished by the teeth on the cap and reddish/brown stem with little to no bruising.
