ID Request W. Chicago
    #14545666 - 06/01/11 01:10 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

If anyone can help me identify this it would be great! I dont plan to eat them, but am still wet behind the ears and really hope to come across something special...

Any thoughts on these?

Habitat: (NW Chicago Suburbs,Illinois[growing in a partially shaded area, surrounded by pompas grass, attached to recycled mulch from village which is ontop of a weed guard and poor wet soil)
Gills: (Dark brown, with black inside and a rusty color on edges around radius. Not attached to stem)
Stem: (about 2 – 3 inches long, thin, slightly shiny white with beige sheen, smooth, fiberous with a small channel through the center)
Cap: (about 1 inch, rusty red/brown, buff when dry starting from the center out to edges, conical, ribbed and radiating from center to edges and then they sort of follow to the gills0
Spore Print: (Looks to be a jet black with almost a blue hint in it, I did it on a paper towel but currently have more going on computer paper. Also did a few others with it and those were obviously brown to me)
Bruising Color Change: (None that I observed)
Smell: (I didn’t smell anything really)
Other things I wanted to point out is that the weather has been goofy with all the storms hitting lately. Lots of rain and cool nights, then the past four days have been in the 80’s, humid, with occasional rainfall. Soil is definitely spongy moist.

I'd call that a Psathyrella species.

Very nice ID Request Btw; it's way better than most "n00b" ID's we get.

P. gracilis or something close, I'd wager.

spore print is off and the gills seem to be a tad bit dark for gracilis.
