Found: Reishi In Oklahoma!? (pics)
    #14547883 - 06/01/11 08:49 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

hey all.  was mowing the lawn the other day and noticed a few very familiar specimens growing from the dead roots of a red bud tree.  I picked one of them to show you the very recognizable colors and shape of the varnished conk.  it's definately growing on hardwood, definately a polypore, is there any look alikes that i'm not aware of?

i knew there were west coast varieties of reishi, but i had no idea that they were this far into the middle of the states, and that they grew during this kind of warmth (60's-90's).  Included are some pics for verification of identity.  Also, i found more specimens in another location down on the river, same fungus, also growing on a red bud stump.

This specimen is one of the smaller, more solitary specimens.  There were other, more shelf like in appearance, that i left to continue growing in hopes of perhaps cloning if this species has related medical benefits

any ideas as to the exact species?

Can't see what else it'd be growing from hardwood and all.

i just remember reading stamet's books and his comments about reishi oregonense (sp?) that it was a seperate species.  i was under some impression that lucidum was an oriental species, but i could very well have been mistaken.

G. lucidum is hardwoods  and likes warmer climates. G. tsugae is a cooler temperate species preferring softwoods like hemlock. They are both considered reishii. G. oregonense is a separate species with different medicinal benefits from the two species of reishii.

You have G. lucidum.
