Great career. I remember him on the Magic with Penny when I was a kid.

Honestly up there with Russel and Wilt "The Stilt" as one of the greatest all time centers. He completely changed the dynamic of the game with his tremendous size, accompanied with his surprising athleticism and soft touch below the rim. But more than his championship pedigree, he was one of the best ambassadors to the game, and is generally a well loved person, from his antics on the movie screen, to being a prankster. The NBA will be a worse league without him and his "Shaq-Fu."

I think at this point the league will be better without that huge oaf limping around. That doesn't mean he wasn't great but his day is fucking done.

I think he could have played another season. He is still a hell of a player. I cant believe he was able to play and stay healthy as long as he did. That in itself is a testament to just how special he was. #5 all-time leader in scoring.

His personality is priceless

Would have loved for him to hit the 20 year mark in the NBA.

I'd love for him to be an NBA analyst, and a professional wrestler which he might have actually wanted to be after he retired:lol:.

When wasnt he producing? You are aware that he was injured pretty much all season, right?

I mean there is no doubt his numbers were in decline, but a guy of his size and strength is a valuable asset. I am sure there would still be a number of teams who would be interested in signing him. Hell, the Heat might have even wanted him back.

I guess he would rather go out now instead of being forced out in another season or two

Yeah, but that was Shaq.

Though O’Neal won four championships — a total that places him among the game’s greats — we will always wonder how much more he could have done had he been a little more accommodating, a little more dedicated, a little less antagonistic.

How many more titles would O’Neal and Bryant have, had they not shoved each other away in 2004?

That infamous rift was always characterized as a clash of egos, but I’ve always believed it was also a clash of work ethics. Bryant is supremely, almost pathologically, dedicated to his craft and his fitness. O’Neal, well, is not.

There is a reason that O’Neal won just a single most valuable player trophy in the regular season, but claimed three M.V.P. awards in the finals. He valued June much more than November, and had little use for July, August and September.

But then, O’Neal was rarely judged against other players, but rather against himself. Fans and commentators always wanted more: a face-up jumper, a better free-throw percentage, more blocks. With his size, strength and agility, O’Neal could have been one of the greatest defensive centers. He was not.

He gave what he was willing to give.  If that wasn't enough for you, well, too bad.  Maybe his attitude helped to extend his career.  We'll never know.  19 years is an incredibly long career for a big man.

19 years is long but it seemed like he had the talent to play a bit longer. But you cant blame the 5th all-time scorer for ending it where he did. If he and Kobe would have gotten along better, he could have won a few more rings in LA me thinks. But he still ended up with what, 3-4 rings? including the 1 with Wade in Miami.

I could see him coming out of retirement after he gets this surgery done and takes some time off. I could see him going back to Miami and playing another season. Especially if Miami falls short this year. He could go in knowing he wouldnt have to have the same kind of role he was used to.

Still he was a damned great player and how he stayed healthly at 350-370lbs for 19 years is truly amazing.

I'd love to see him back (not on the Heat). For some reason I see his retirement being legitimate. He held a press conference, which I didn't see and forgot to look for, at his house today, gave the ESPN guests and if anyone else was there dinner.

I saw his retirement party, it was pretty awesome. He was walking behind the ESPN feeds on just about every SportsCenter show. He walked up on Scoop and gave him a kiss on the cheek in the middle of his Live shoot. It was pretty funny.

I think this retirement was just as much because of his injury. He said first thing he was going to do after being retired was get surgery. I think if the surgery goes well and he recovers well, we could see him back for 1 more season

Id hate to see him on the Heat but it's a move that makes sense. He's played with Wade before and it'd give him a team where he'd only need to play 10-15 minutes a night and not be counted on to score. Just rebound and defend.

That does sound awesome. I'll look it up online.

I'd love him go back to the Magic where I first knew of him.

I couldnt see him playing in Orlando. I just dont think he fits with their style of offense, just like he didnt fit in Phoenix. I think the Suns and Magic are very similar in their styles of play. Very much run and gun teams. Plus I think they will keep Dwight. If they let him get away thatd be a huge blow to their franchise.

I am waiting to see the NBA draft. Ive never been so excited for a draft. Completely rebuilding our franchise (Cleveland). That would be a miracle if Cleveland can lure Howard by signing 2 sick rookies. Then have Howard deliver the title that LeBron never could.

ha That would be pretty amazing if he went to Cleveland. He'd look good with their jerseys. I wouldn't mind him staying in Orlando since he was drafted by them and all.

Vince Carter might have taken a hit because of the Magic and Suns' styles. I've been saying that a while. Even with someone with the range he has doesn't mean they can play that sort of game consistently. He's 34, but he's still in great shape.

Add Dwight Howard with rookies Kyrie Irving and hopefully Derrick Williams, if not Ernes Canter and you have completely rebuilt the team into an immediate playoff contender. Still going to have Mo Williams, Ramon Sessions, Varejo, and JJ Hickson.

Even without adding Dwight, which is a long shot. It's going to be hard to get any FA's to come to Cleveland, Ohio. I still think we have some good pieces. Need to add a big man though.

That was a stupid move bringing him in, but it's what he had to do to get their pick. That move ends up looking pretty genius considering it brought us a #4 overall pick and Cleveland is trying to trade the #4 to get the #2 so we can get Derrick Williams to pair up with Irving. Williams like another Dirk. A big man who can easily step out and knock down the 3 ball with consistency, has the wing span of a 7'2'' player
