Please post some tips on how to sanitize a room after an outbreak of green mold!
    #14546408 - 06/01/11 03:38 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I just lost 8 cakes to the horrible green mold.  I believe it was due to birthing some of the cakes too early, which then got infected and spread to my other cakes.  I got rid of the cakes with the mold and am ready to start birthing another batch that I have.

In order to prevent another outbreak, I need to clean this room as thoroughly as possible.  The room has a carpet, which is unfortunate because I'm sure there are spores sitting in it.  To resolve this, I am going to shampoo my carpet. Does that sound like a good idea or would it not make much of a difference?

I also bought lysol and a bunch of clorox wipes, whereby I will wipe down/spray EVERYTHING in this room!  The perlite will be washed/cooked in the oven and the FC will be sanitized.

PLEASE give me some tips on how to prevent green mold from infecting my cakes that are near birthing. I am already making sure I wait until I see signs of pinning to dunk and roll them.  I also have an AC in my room now so I will be able to keep the temperature down. I plan to mist my cakes more and fan them a lot more as well.  I also plan to use gloves and wash the gloves with alcohol any time I need to handle the cakes for any reason.

ANY AND ALL TIPS WOULD BE APPRECIATED!! And this may help future growers as well!

Scrub everything down than use peroxide, alcohol, dilluted bleach water, and scrub everything down good again. How much carpet is there in your work space? Could always lay down some painters plastic if you are too worried about the carpet kicking shit up.

Could also be your method... Are you using a glovebox?

The entire room has carpet in it.  It is my room and the only room in the house that I can use to grow.  I am hoping that vacuuming and shampooing the carpet will be enough.  Painters plastic seems like a bit much.

I have not used a glovebox.  Are gloveboxes solely used for inoculation? If so, the next time I do an inoculation, I will make one.  I have only had 1/16 jars become contaminated during incubation.  The 7 others became contaminated after they were in the fruiting chamber for AT LEAST a week, so I think that I didn't have enough FAE and that I birthed some too early: The first two cakes that got infected had no pins.  After I removed them, I added another two cakes to my FC.  About a week later, all but one cake had mushroom growth and that cake became contaminated first. It was removed, but not in time to save the other cakes.

WTF..... 1st. use a PC to sterilize your BRF cakes.
2nd let it colonize 100% and then give it at least a week to consolidate. (i suggest you to give it 3 weeks)

:lolsy:
Drink it dont spray it.

Alc. will only be able to kill anything (except braincells) about a concentration above 60%.

I did PC to serilize my BRF cakes actually.  I waited until they were 100% colonized +a week, but I think I got some of the cakes mixed up (some colonized faster than others)

I would like to steam vacuum it.  Unfortunately, I don't have a steamer or money to afford one or hire someone to do it.  That's why I was hoping that shampooing it would have a similar effect.

Again, I don't have enough money to rent a steamer or anything like that.  I do, however, have a rug shampooer that I can use for free.  If there is a huge difference in their effects, let me know.  The carpet in my room is already very clean.  I just want to remove any mold spores that may have landed.

Dont get too anal with that.
Clean your room as you would do if Claudia Chiffer would visit you, and you should be fine.

Trich comes around to show you that you may introduced/exposed sub before it was fully colonised, you have a laeak in your sterilization procedures, have stale air, or standing water.

I just want to be super cautious because I tried to "save" my cakes by cutting off the green portions, which I now know spreads the spores because the green is just a mass of spores.

Dont try to fight the green. (you will loose)
Avoiding, is the only suggestet strategy.
Try to find out where the leak was and try to avoid it in th future...
if you notice where there is/was a leak in your tek, then you are able to avoid it.
