Level of sterilization/cleanliness of environment
    #14545877 - 06/01/11 01:57 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I've attempted cultivation a few times so far, and had contamination at some point during or after first fruiting each time.  I think each instance was for different reasons, and I don't think any of them were because of the room I was using, but I was wondering what level of sterility/cleanliness is necessary for the room in which I'm growing.  I know to sterilize the substrate, make sure all the instruments and the container I'm using is clean, and I know to keep doors and windows shut.  I know it can't be utterly sterile, what level of cleanliness do I need?  What other precautions need to be taken?

Edit: just to be clear, I'm talking about the room in which I would have a fruiting chamber, not the prep work.  Can't be the same room unfortunately.

You could grow in an extremely dirty room without growing contams as long as you are providing the correct amount of FAE.

:whathesaid:

I grow in an old basement & take no sterile precautions w/ it aside from sweeping the floor once a month.

agreed. i always have a laugh at the guys who come on here
talking about installing hepa filters on thier grow closets
and such, your actual fruiting area does'nt need to be
very clean.
in every other area of mycology however, cleanliness is essential

yea, if you're really that worried about it just clean the room & run an ionizer in it for AE.

fully colonized mycelium is very contam resistant. You are likely getting contams from your casing layer. You dont happen to be using Miracle Grow: Moisture Control, are you?

I keep hearing that, I have at best a rudimentary knowledge of Fresh Air Exchange.  In the past I've used a simplified PF Tek, putting some colonized jars into a cooler with the top replaced with saran wrap with some punctures in it.  This time I'm going to run a traditional fruiting chamber using a traditional dunk and roll technique.  In this case, is FAE simply drilling holes on each side of the chamber?  This may be an extreme newbie concern, but I was concerned about what air was being exchanged between the fruiting chamber and the outside.

It would be great if people here could give me or direct me to a better understanding of Fresh Air Exchange.

I'm not using miracle grow.  I've generally gotten contams right after I see the first fruits coming up, last time I got cobweb mold, which I'd only gotten in the past if I damage the cakes during picking or scraping.  Respondents here said it was from lack of fresh air exchange, which may have been too many layers of saran wrap, which I put on because one wasn't staying on after removing it for misting.

Sounds like you tried to nig-rig a grow setup. that first time

For FAE, you want to drill the holes on the sides of the tub. If you are doing a monotub, I have always done 2 holes that are slightly smaller than a fist on each side of the long sides of the tub, then stuff those with polyfill in order to filter out contaminants.

You will also want to fan them several times per day to swap out the air inside the tubs. This is done by just opening the top briefly and moving the air around for a couple seconds.

Another way (although I have no experience with this method) is to use one of those air bubblers that they use for fish tanks. I have heard of them working well.

If you are still doing PF tek, then you want to look at other peoples' setup for a perlite terrarium. Basically the same method except for 2 large holes, you make a bunch of small holes but with no polyfill

Thanks.  So, just to be 100%, FAE for a PF Tek would be drilling all those holes plus fanning?  I will be sticking to the PF Tek for now, I'm wondering what model of plastic tub I should I get and where its best to get it, or if that matters.

On the original topic, I'm under the impression that an air conditioner is a big no no.  I've assumed this already, just checking.
