Psychedelics and Mental Health
    #14545452 - 06/01/11 12:07 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

This post is primarily aimed toward Chinacat72, if he's around.  Of course I'd also appreciate the input of anybody with valuable insight into the topic.  Here's a quote from 2003:
Quote:

Now I am dedicated to becoming a part of the misniscule research movement into psychedelics. I am just getting my BS in psychology/pre-med. Next is grad school or med school. This is all for the sole purpose of working with psychedelics in addiction and othe mental disorders they have shown great promise in.

I understand the potential of psychedelics to help or cure addictions.  But which mental disorders specifically have they been shown to help, and in what contexts?
I've taken acid a dozen times and had as much as 14 hits liquid in a single dose.  But the most powerful experience I had with it was my first time doing liquid.  I fell into an eternity loop of insanity.  One by one every action I tried to perform fizzled out and sent another shard of my fractured ego careening into oblivion.
But the greatest aspect of the whole experience was when I started coming back to reality and I knew at that moment what sanity really was.  Nothing in my life until that point held much significance or certainty.  This was the most important realization I had ever come to.  I had been so far outside of my cozy little mind that when I finally caught a glimpse of sanity, it was like seeing it for the first time.
It did me wonders to finally know for the first time that I was approaching sanity.  I am wondering if anyone has had the same experience and if it helped them.  It made me nervous about strong psychedelics because I was comfortable telling myself I was sane now.  Although the realization came to me with the aid of acid, it didn't help that I felt completely psychotic when I was peaking.
So I wonder what applications psychedelics could have for people with schizophrenia, autism, OCD, and too many other conditions for me to think of.  It's a delicate subject that I think should be treated with much care and respect so as not to cause any harm to people who will not be able to recover.  I do however think that a lot of good could be done.
Finally, I want to share a story of a person I started talking to last year.  He has Asperger's, a type of autism that affects a person's ability to deal with social situations and interacting with people.  I won't be able to go into much detail about this because I'm by no means an expert.  Some claim that the mental aspects of Asperger's are caused by an overabundance of interneural connections through the dendritic spines, which causes the person to misinterpret or fail to understand social cues.  Through the use of MDMA, the person I was speaking to began to grow more comfortable in social situations by feeling empathy toward the people he was with.  I have heard that MDMA either removes dendritic spines or somehow otherwise disrupts these interneural connections.  Thoughts?

Well are you going to tell us?  What is sanity?????????

I have a good friend who has Asperger's and I took him up on the mountain and gave him two hits of MDMA and the changes in him after were beyond anything I have ever seen in another human.  Positive beyond belief almost.  Wish it had worked as well for me.

Haha, sanity's hard to describe.  It is (or it should be) your ground state, like a loyal dog that's waiting for you when you come home.  When my mind was in tatters it was like a building had been demolished, and peaking up at me from the rubble and dust was a tiny, humble, unique, and beautiful creature, impossible to describe, but what I instantly recognized to be my own little piece of sanity.

MDMA has some of the greatest and most consistent pyschological benefits imo. It can work wonders for social anxiety and low self-esteem.

Other psychs with a more prominent "mind trip" have a much greater chance of being disasterous.

Were the changes you saw in him consistent, did they last? That is very interesting, I'm not totally informed on aspergers other then knowing it comes with major social anxiety issues but I  definitely see how MDMA would help; wouldn't have guessed it would be life lasting though. I guess for someone with that type of issue it only takes the experience to realize what your missing out on?

Not only have they lasted 4 years now but there is no sign of anything stopping. He's changed just about everything about his life for the better and I couldn't be more impressed. Like I said I'd give my bankroll to have had it effect me like that.  He's living really high now.  He lives several states away but we visit each other usually once a year.  He's got a pretty great gig going right now.

Actually aspergers is not all bad by far.  Once he decided to change his amazing powers of concentration made it look easy.  I was blown away.

Wow that's very impressive, you could argue you saved the guys life. I don't understand why treatment like this isn't at least explored. We revolve to many negate connotations around illegal drugs; instead we should explore there benefits such as this. I mean they do make people feel damn good that's gotta say something right?

He saved his own life. I take no credit for his self transformation.  It was fun to be there tripping with him however.  He's a wonderful friend.

I met him on the internet. He took all the chances and drove across the country to meet me.

Here we go, study through MAPS.

"Evidence suggests that they have the ability to help us treat post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, end-of-life anxiety, cluster headaches and other difficult-to-treat mental disorders—including, I suspect, the general neurosis that comes from simply being a human being."
