freaking awesome Oz, this is gonna save me a big headache with messing with electricity and breaker boxes.

Top news that the 3k element is enough to bring to temps.

Love the tap for drainage, a sweet build indeed, damm it, Im off to screwfix for an element, gonna get busy and build this.

Never thought of using a metal bin, your a legend.

I think this would work nice with one of wilko's big plastic barrels too!

here

Do you have specs on how long it takes to get up to 145F from cold and hot?

Looking at this element @ screwfix;

good to go u rekon?

this one or this one

It takes just under 2 hours to get to temp and stays between 150F and 165F.

I ran the test with the lid off, no insulation. And no substrate loaded.

I'm going to insulate it to lower heating time and increase efficency

great info ozzy, glad that units working for you, insulation will help loads!

My steamer takes 2 hours for the sub center to reach 150F but it wasn't packed anywhere near full, say a 5 gallon volume bucket of straw in two bags.

Did you run the tests from cold tap water?

Fractal.

Yes straight out the tap around 14 degree celsius. Under normal operation id fill it out the hot tap to save time. If i turn it up my boiler pumps out 60 C water, so heating time would be pretty damn quick!

thats amazing off a 3kw element. Once you insulate that gonna be a nice economical way to do some bulk straw.

How much straw can you fit in there?

From real hot tap water, mine is similar, comes out real hot, thats gonna take no time at all!

I'd say 1.30min all in for full pasteurization,

maybe the element will only turn on for about 20-30 mins throughout the whole process?

Nice.

Gonna build this when i get the time/cash.

Ive not used straw, I use coir/verm/coffee in pillow cases, enough for 2 monotubs. Probably enough room for 3 or 4 monotubs at a push.

Once warm, in a period of 4 hours, it used 1.5kw. (I have a plug in meter) uninsulated thats pretty reasonable! I only remebered I owned a plug in meter after it hit temps. Whoops.

I'll do another test run at the weekend, hot water, insulated and with the meter plugged in from the start. Id speculate it would pretty economical.

I cant advise you on what type of thermostat you would use in the US sorry. The one I used slides into a tube built into the element housing.

I guess you just need whatever you guys over there use as hot water thermostats. Mine has a range of 50-70 celsius

I dont think it would provide enough heat to heat 40L of Water in a reasonable time. You could maybe use an element out a catering kettle, but there usually only 25 L.

An immersion heater costs less than 20 quid, so not unreasonable

Some kettles are 3kw. I figured the element would be the same thing. I know that beer makres get a tesco kettle or two jsut for the elements to make a mashtun for their grains.
