It looks like something from the pleurotus genus, but I'm not sure if it's pleurotus ostreatus. If they are, then they're pretty old specimens.

I've never found oysters, but don't they go a sort of browny colour?

Color varies quite a bit with oysters, from brown to grey to pink, but they tend to wash out when older. But I'm far from sure that this is p. ostreatus!

I thought it was poisonous.

EDIT: Well, it has been linked to poisoning in some cases. I suppose one logical conclusion is that a compound found in it reacts with something else that can be found in human diet, to produce a third chemical, which is toxic.

Pleurocybella porrigens is usually considered a good edible and i have never read anything about poisonings. Not that im saying it can't/ doesn't happen.

Crepidotus applanatus is another lookalike, I don't think it is poisonous but it is labeled inedible.

Broadleaf dead tree... Oyster in my opinion
Think color is related to sun exposure... More exposure, the darker grey color it is.  Pure white tend to be covered or under the log.

Can do a spore print... Nothing really like it poisonous in my area at least..

Thanks for the replies, I guess it's inconclusive at this point. I would take a print but there's no fresh specimen and I'm taking an extended vacation in a week. I was just curious.

I'm pretty positive that these are some species of pleuorotus rather than crepidotus or pleurocybella, but they're old as balls.

Pleurocybella has only been linked to two sets of poisonings, and everyone involved in them was really old, had kidney problems, and ate a lot.  They are almost certain to be perfectly safe for healthy people in normal quantities.

I think you'll find a lot of things that look like this have white prints, so taking one may not help an awful lot.

Actually... I find the spore prints to be light yellow... Not really white, though suppose some could be even lighter or white.... Only have experience with the oysters around here...

No expert... But do have a pound of them in my refrigerator
