Got myself an old pressure cooker, Don't know how to use it.

So I got this old Prestige Hi Dome pressure cooker for free from Freecycle newtwork around my area. Very proud of the find
I had to change the seal for it, but it only costed me 4 pounds.
However, I have no idea how to use it. What are the two heavy metal parts for? Are they any different?
If anyone know hows this works, please let me know.
Thanks.

Wow that is old lol...The metal peices are different weights for different psi and the black rubber gasket is a emergency blow out valve

what about that center nipple though? wtf is that about?
since it's that old, I'm thinking one weight is for 5 psi, the other for 10 psi? I don't know how you'd check it out unless you could get the temp in there.
but essentially pop in on the range, full heat. wait for both weights to pop up, rattle, release steam etc, then turn down the heat until it only happens once every couple minutes.
if you use to sterilize pf jars, just make sure you've got something underneath the jars (like a plate or jar lids), fill so that water comes up just below the bottoms, and follow the normal pf tek for pressure cooking.
I dunno if you could do grains with that thing if it won't go up to 15 psi. BUT I guess you won't know until you try...
maybe try to figure out how to rig a pressure gauge up to it?

Thats where the weight sits.
1 fill Pc up with a few inches of water 2 place lid and lock 3 when steam starts to pour out of the center nipple place the desired weight for the desired psi you want over the center nipple 4 when weight starts to jiggle then your PC is at the desired psi of the selected weight
I'm assuming those weights are just sitting on top of the lid for the pictures and there is no open ports except for the center nipple and the rubber blow out valve

Honestly I'd be pretty sketched about using a PC that old. Older pressure cookers were not always built very well (some were). A micro-fracture can turn it into an explosive

AHA! that was dumb of me...I thought that the weights were already attached to their own valves (weird huh) but who knows? maybe the OP found some old soviet teknology? in russia cooker pressure YOU

Funnily enough I have the same or a very similar looking old Prestige PC. I have only one weight though, it has a H inscribed on it. Let me know if you use the H weight and how you fare using it as I have yet to try it out. Thanks!
MG
PS Do you guys have any information on the PSI it can do? You just seem to be guessing but I have no idea. I would be sickened if it fails to sterilize my rye grain after putting in all the effort. If the H weight only does a PSI of 10 could I still sterilize grain with it successfully? Cheers

I'm going to take the H means maybe heavy? Theres no way I can really tell so its a guess on my part but it looks like a 10 and a 15 psi weight.
I'd do a test jar with the heaviest weight at 90 minutes and one at 120 minutes and see what happens
my 15 psi weight weighs 65 grams so that might be a point of reference to go off of

The weight is three weights screwed together marked H,M and L, H = 15psi M = 10psi L = 5psi
The rubber bung is the ready to serve indicator and the middle will rise and seal the hole in it this tels you the cooker is under pressure.
Put some water in the cooker put the weight on the central nipple and place on a high heat when steam starts to escape from the centre turn the heat down but keep a small hiss come ing from the weight.
Time the cook and turn the heat off
Dont open the cooker until the ready to serve indicator drops back down.

no. you want to keep a low heat so the thing stays at 15 psi. otherwise it will just cool down and not maintain a constant temp to achieve sterility. if it is a 15 psi weight you want 15 psi for 90 minutes. when 90 minutes is up then you can turn the heat off...I hope that's whatcha meant?

Maybe the wording is a bit ambiguous by time the cook I was indicating turn the heat off after the cooker was up to pressure for the desired amount of time
sorry for the confusion

Thank you all, I think I got it now. Yeah, the two weights are not attached to the lid, in the picture. Although, I cant seem to see any markings on them for the PSI.
I'll give it a practice run with the PF jars, since they dont necessarily need to be PC-ed.
Thanks all again!

@darkgm:
I've noticed now. On both weights I can see an H on the outer one, and when I unscrew them, one has an L and the other an M. Which one should I use.
I presume the M one, as I dont want to get it too pressured up.
Also, should I consider H+M=25psi and H+L=20psi?

On a closer look:
Actually each of the weights is made up of 3 parts: which have L, M and H. (from smallest to biggest)
Only the L+M weight 85grams and with the H added weight 120grams.
Should I only use the L+M?

Yeap, im using the 85 gram weight.
I have the thing on the stove right now, and I have to say that it's just now when I realised what a potential bomb this is.
Especially when some pressure gathers up and the valve releases it every 30 seconds or so... gets me so freaked out. I hope that's normal, by the way.

Yeah I don't know about that, mine gives a slow small steady release of steam. You might have the heat too low and it has to keep building up pressure after each release.Play around with the heat a bit and see

Hi Prestige instructions say that the cooker works at 5, 10, and 15psi use the small weight for 5psi then screw the middle weight on for 10psi and use all three for 15psi I have 2 of these one from the late1960s and one from the mid 1970s they work fine. Just remember not to open the cooker until the little plug in the ready to serve indicator drops down.
When you use it it will leak small amounts of steam from the lid and the ready to serve indicator but as the pressure builds up it will seal.
