Hiking in the White Mountains (New Hampshire/Maine border) is nice. Lots of lakes in Maine to canoe, camp, portage. Take bug repellent- the no see-ums can be voracious little f'ers.

Most of my experince is with hiking. The White Mountains are pretty sweet, but the better peaks are all in New Hampshire. If you're farther up in Maine than be sure to check out Baxter State Park (Mt Katahdin) Its a little more regulated, but one of the gnarliest peaks in all of New England.

I was thinking about going to Baxter state park, what do you mean by more regulated. do I have to pay to camp/backpack? whats it like up there?

It is regulated because you usually have to drive through a gate and talk to a ranger before they let you in. Just to hike they make you carry a flashlight. Parking at the main lots fills up on the weekends, so you can "reserve" a spot if you call/pay in advance. In order to camp there you need to make a reservation, so dont just show up expecting to get a campsite. You have to pay to camp, and I don't think you can camp anywhere, it has to be at a campsite. They are also pretty strict with trail closures and wildlife areas so please follow the rules. Baxter is a beautiful place and the rangers want to keep it that way.

oh my god go to Acres of Wildlife in Steepfalls, Maine.
It's kind of a little kiddie place, but if you go out and camp in the "wilderness section" it's so much funnn! Just trip on shrooms and chill in the forest xD There's a lot to do, a nice little beach, two different playgrounds. And they have a cafe and pub to eat at so you don't even have to worry about cooking food. Plus they have indoor plumbing and hot showers
