noob question - saw dust/shavings and verm' substrate?
    #14544382 - 06/01/11 05:12 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

iv got access to a shit load of saw dust and shavings at work, some mdf, untreated pine, a tiny bit of plyboard and a variety of hardwoods mixed into 44gal drums. iv been grabbing it for my garden beds, and mixing it though [hoping to make a friendly garden for actives, thats another story though].

so iv been reading Damion5050's coir tek, and i just thought of asking about using saw dust or shavings instead of coir for wood lovers. instead of hi-jacking, i thought id start a new thread.

now iv never done a grow, but i plan to do one as soon as i get my spore prints, following damion5050's coir tek with WBS.
has anyone tried a sawdust and verm mix for the substrate before?
what would stop it from working?

oh and i did search, i just didnt find anything.

Don't know what "mdf" is but I'd keep the pine as far away from any wood-lover's substrate that I planned to spawn wood-loving mushroom myce to.
Concentrate your efforts on obtaining as much of any variety of hardwood sawdust from your source that you can for any wood-loving variety of mushroom cultivation.

Don't use sawdust in the place of coir in damion's coir tek if you plan on cultivating cubesis.
Cubensis are not a wood decomposer.
Your flushes won't be worth the time and materials it took you to get to the point of flushing, if they flush at all.

Sawdust and wood chips are what is used in most edible grows.  Get a Shiitake culture and use the sawdust for them but MDF and plywood have lots of adhesives in them which isn't good if you could separate just hardwood is best.
