Use for Brewer's Yeast
    #14544147 - 06/01/11 02:43 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Well, I acquired a big container of brewer's yeast for free awhile back. I was wondering if there are any uses for it for growing mushies?

Perhaps as an additive to coir? Has anybody ever heard of that being done?

In Mycology, brewer's yeast used as an additive to agar and LC mediums at .4% by volume of water.

I'v used brewer's yeast at .4% by volume of water both in both agar (PDA, and MEA with peptone) and LC mediums (malt/dex).

Nutritional yeast from an organic grocers market can be applied exactly the same as brewer's yeast.  Another additive to culturing mediums is peptone.

Nutritional yeast is about 7 dollars a pound so I wouldn't imagine it being economically viable.

I have tried 4% raw sugar LC and it did not work very well. I have had great success with a 4% honey solution.

I haven't got into agar work yet. That is my next step that I very much look forward to. Would you like to share more info on what exactly I would do with brewer's yeast in regards to agar?

I'll google it, but I have never heard of peptone and I have done lots and lots of reading on the shroomery...

At the percent by volume of water brewer's yeast is to be used, a pound can, will, and may last you a lifetime.

All that's done with brewer's yeast and peptone in regards to agar is to add it into your base, agar ingredient mix at .4%.

I'm not really sure what peptone and brewer's yeast adds to the agar (probably some beneficial trace nutrients and vitamins).

Noticed overly nutritious agar mediums results in slow colonization of the medium and un-rhizomorphic mycelium growth in species who's mycelium is rhizomorphic.

I use MEA for everything, only applying overly nutritious agar mediums to "buy me some time".

I'd like to suggest forgetting LC and jumping straight into doing agar--> grains.
