Sending Seeds to the United States
    #14543167 - 05/31/11 10:35 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

When sending seeds to the USA, please send them as a package and not a letter.
Our postal system sorts letter mail with high speed, high pressure rollers that crush seeds.
Same is true for US members sending items within the country or internationally- use a bubble envelope and send them as a package.
(Theoretically, "non-machineable" status would work, but it's risky. Send it as a package.)

These seeds were too precious to lose.

Both of those packaging methods would qualify as packages and you would pay package rate and they would be handled as packages by the postal system.
So I'm not sure what your point is.

My message: do NOT fold up seeds in a piece of paper and put them in a letter if they are headed to the United States.
They will be crushed.

On a positive note, I'm sure I'm in an elite group now that I've eaten the seeds of that particular cactus.
Grainy, sandy. A little bit of taste but not much and not bad.
I don't know what I was expecting but somehow it's just what it should be.

Anyway, I'll try to germinate the seeds that are more or less intact, and report back.
It was a nice round 100 seeds to start with, so percents will be easy to calculate.

Bubble mailers are essential, and at least sending from the US they qualify for the international small packet price (~2.00-2.50/pkt) as long as they are <3/4" thick, non-rigid, and reasonably sized. Unfortunately APCs do not allow for the international small packet price so off to the IMM you must go.

I know Australia has a similar classification which is down right cheap to the US (~2.00-2.50 AUD). Most padded envelopes or small boxes I've received from Europe haven't been more than a 2.00-3.00 EUR either.

I once got seed in an envelope supported with a frame work of popcicle sticks  (just thick enough to keep the rollers off them)    not saying its foolproof,  the sticks can easily break...  but I got about 300 mint condition hybrid trich seeds for the price of a postage stamp   (the kind gentleman had a massive collection and lots of blooms that year)

Edit:  and it seems WSS beat me to the idea.  it works though!  And no,  they didn't have to pay package prices.  the sticks are pretty light.

Different countries have different rules about "what's a package".
And some post offices are lax about enforcement.
If you can send it at letter rate, that's great- but make sure that it's not a letter if it's going to the USA.
Because a letter will be crushed.

We had a discussion about it over in Mush Cult not long ago.
Agar wedges can be mailed in a letter with the right technique.
spore prints can too, but the pressure of the rollers will cause embossing:

The popsickle technique would not be a package. It can be sent as a regular letter, but would only work for smaller seeds like cacti seeds. The other would be considered an envelope with a rigid object.  I have plenty of experience with sending under those rates.

Bumping to post pics, but first- no, you can't mail a popsicle stick in a letter in the US.
It's "non-machineable".

But here's the pics!
I put seven seeds in each pot, starting with the best seeds.
Two sprouts so far, we'll see how many more pop up.

I love tht first green burst of energy released from the seed in the first 2 weeks after popping, way over half the first months size growth all inside the tiny shell.

I see three sprouts, not two.

Actually, I was referring to this little bugger.

Methinks you have four.

Yep- #4 is in another pot.

I use a white-LED flashlight to spot the seedlings, the green shows up well but seed caps not so much.
(Same flashlight is great for telling mold from mushroom mycelium)

More pics when there's more sprouts!

Five sprouts as of this morning- the three from above, plus two in separate pots.
