ID Request (New Zealand)
    #14544168 - 06/01/11 02:53 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:
I cant tell you where this shoroom was found because I boght it off a guy who offered it to me while I was having a smoke in Albert Park, He said they were picked about half an hour ago when I bought it, so I guess it could be from anywhere within that radius. I can tell from looking at the base that it  grew in a gathering of smallish sticks and twigs, under some sort of tree, (see nut-like thing on base). Sorry I cant provide more information here.

Gills:
there are brown gills on the underside only, they are about 1mm apart at the stem and get closer as the go towards the cap.

Stem:
3cm long, same colour as cap, doesnt widen, whiteish close to the cap. Roughly 5mm in diameter

Cap:
3cm in diameter at its widest point, 2.7cm at smallest. I would say that is spherical and is convex. It is smooth on the top in the middle but has smaill crack on the edge. Its is an orange/gold colour with some dark blue (almost purple or black) on it.

Spore print color:
I dont have a spore print yet but I will get one tomorrow.

Bruising:
Im not sure if this is bruising but it is the same as the patches of colour mentioned above. In some of the pictures it may look a bit green.

Other information:
To me, it just smells like a mushroom, but I dont have much expertise in this area.

Pictures:

Welcome to the Shroomery!

Your mushroom looks like psilocybe subaeruginosa, albeit in a bad state. Sounds like someone found some shrooms, and decided to make some money off the specimens he didn't fancy eating himself. Did you buy just that one shroom? Hope you didn't pay too much for it, as one single specimen is only sufficient for a threshold dose at best. You typically need 4 to 10 specimens for a decent dose, I've been told.

Thanks for the quick reply.

My mate bought them off the guy because I didnt have any cash on me at the time. He got about a handful for $10. Dont know of the exact number. I only got one off him because I wanted to try and work out what they were.

I havent had shrooms before but I am keen to try.

If I got a couple more off my mate would it be possible to grow some in my backyard or something?

You most likely won't grow them easily with any success.  My tip would be to study that one and research the species on here then go hunting for them.  You have a head start on most first time hunters as you have seen a fresh (reasonably) specimen.

It isn't hard to grow them outdoors at all.
Make a bed out of woodchips in a shady place of your backyard and place a few pieces of mushroom (preferrably from the base with mycelium on it) between layers of wet cardboard. Keep it moist for a few weeks. Check if the mycelium is propagating every once in a while.

The mycelium should now have propagated across a fair part of the cardboard (always do this in the shade. Unlike plants that do photosynthesis, mushrooms don't like direct sunlight, as it makes them dry out). Now you shred up the cardboard and mix it in with the bed of woodchips.

Cover the woodchips with a thin layer of a mix of gardening soil and - if available - 10% vermiculite. Then cover that with another thin layer of twigs and leaf litter. Make sure that your bed is moist at all times, but not too wet. It can handle natural rain, no problem, but don't turn it into a pool of water all the time or it will hinder mycelial growth badly.

Next season you will in all likelihood have your own Psilocybe subaeruginosa mushroom patch in your garden. To maintain it for the following years, just keep mixing new woodchips under (preferrably hardwood, but a mix of woodchips and mulch will do, too).

This website is a treasure trove of information regarding both cultivation of, and hunting for mushrooms, both culinary and psychoactive species. I suggest you read up on the different cultivation teks as well as the hunting guides and decide which one suits your preference (or do both, as many people here do). But haphazardly trying to 'seed' some mushrooms in your backyard is most likely not going to work; you'll need to do some research and preparation first. Good luck!

Apologies. Didn't realise growing cold loving species was so straight forward, I have read several comments on here stating quite the opposite, the general answer I have seen given was "get some cube spores and follow x-tek instead."

I have had success with Psilocybe subaeruginosa in my own woodchip patch and always put it down to an amazing bout of lucky timing, conditions, etc.

awesome bro!! found these particular types amidst a wide range of golden sub varietys (all magical) yep your all right... although growing them is an easy thing to do.. if you havent found yourself a personal backyard and woodchip collection, then searching any garden  in auckland could prove very succesful... right now is your last chance, i feel like the season will be stretching a little longer this year due to nice weather.. im hoping to finish my searches b4 the next 3 weeks is up!!! LIKE I SAID MAN JUST GO SEARCHING.... i know people that used to walk around auckland spraying spores onto all of these chips and spreading the goodness..... (the kind of woodchip that paves the auckland motorway, wearing a high vis vest can be VERYYYY opportunistic) happy end of season!!

Hey bro! I'm heading to NZ in 2 and a half weeks!?!?!?

Really hoped to go picking!! But sounds like i'll be pushing it as far as the season is concerned.. I'm used to looking for subs in Melbourne, but thought it'd be fun to hunt something different.. Blue Meanies on the the Rugby ovals after a frost is good I hear?

hang on.. I'll post in the NZ SEASON forum..
