what cacti and succulents to avoid ?
    #14543126 - 05/31/11 10:24 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

hello all , i'm a cacti/succulent addict but am still just a beginer .
what good results i have achieved has been more good luck than good management . i understand that some cacti/succulents are tougher than others to keep alive , can some of you more experienced growers tell me which plants to avoid until i become more knowledgeable about soil mixes , etc, etc ?
also i'm considering making a soil mix using 50% cactus mix , 30% wood ash and 20% sand or fine gravel .
would this be a good mix to try ? or would it be better suited for vege's ?  so far i'm growing several trichocereus ,
{ all healthy apart from the occasional blackspot and insect attacks}.
also growing lithops, mamms, lopho, gymno and an astrophytum ornatum .
thanks in advance .

cacti mostly take care of themselves...  Ariocarpus are on the more sensitive side though.

Your soil mix sounds find for trichs and other hardy cacti,  but lophs and some of the other button cactii prefer mineral based soils.  (theres a few threads that mention it.  'm too tired to fetch them for you tonight though)
