Undescribed Psilocybe * 2
    #14541841 - 05/31/11 05:43 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

About a month ago I found a few small mushroom growing from a potted plant in my bathroom. It was eventually found to be an undescribed psilocybe species, belonging to Section Semilanceatae and apparently resembling Psilocybe Strictipes.

The original thread can be found here.

Samples were sent to TimmiT for microscopic observation, and here are his findings.

Quote:

TimmiT said:
The pics are bad (my camera doesn't like my microscope), but here are the results from microscopy on these:

Spores:

elipsiod to elongate-elipsoid with broad apical germ pore, thick walled, yellow-brown colour, avg 12 x 6 µm

Pleurocystidia:
none observed

Cheilocystidia:

abundant, hyaline, lageniform to narrowly lageniform, avg 29 x 6 µm

Conclusions:
They belong in Psilocybe section Semilanceatae. It seems likely that these are the same species as the undescribed ones that inski has found in potted plants. Hopefully he can comment on how well they compare.

Recently I noticed two more pins popping up. They are incredibly small (I'd say 5mm in height) but appear healthy and are showing signs of growth.

Below are pictures of the mature specimens found earlier in the year.

And here are daily photographs of the pins since I first noticed them. (I will update this post as the specimen continues to mature.)

Inski said this in reply to a message I sent him

Quote:

"...it is definitely belonging in Section Semilanceatae and looks to be very similar to P. strictipes"

I can't tell you too much more than that, the first time I heard of P. Strictipes was this morning, so I'm not familiar with it all.

I doubt it.
I would like to get some good spore prints when they're mature and hopefully send them on to someone who would be interested in trying to cultivate this species.

being in the section semilanceata they are going to be extremely hard to grow. but i know exactly who can do it.

Yes, I will collect both spore prints and tissue samples.

Hopefully somebody will give a try at growing them.

Whats up with finding mushrooms very similar to Ps. strictipes in strange places all over? One was found above 11'000 outside of Telluride, CO and one was found at '9500 in the Chiricahua Mountains in SE Arizona during monsoon season last year, and now this.  Cool stuff!

now that you mention it, that sounds like the story in PMOTW . but i dont think the mushroom was related to P strictipes. I think that was resembling a P pelliculosa.

They should neither be eaten nor binned, they need to be dried and belong in a herbarium, you cretin.

I can't remember where i read it. It was in a article talking about Psilocybe distribution. It mentioned how the Mountainous forests of North America have relatively few Psilocybes in comparison to the mountains in Central and south mexico and South America. It went on to say that for a long time the Coniferous forests of North America were thought to be lacking any active Psilocybes until 1996 ( maybe 1997? unsure of the year exactly) when a single specimen of a bluing Psilocybe very similar to Psilocybe strictipes was found in a Sub-alpine forest around '11000 outside of Telluride, CO.

I think Stamets may have written that article.
