Stumbled upon a Business Plan
    #14542688 - 05/31/11 08:57 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

The other day I was enjoying an afternoon Volcano session with a highschool friend and randomly thought up an idea for an online business venture.  From what I can tell, the market is not in existance as of yet.  The technology to really make it doable for moderate expenses has only recently become available, and I think I can get it going.

The idea of building a web company from scratch is a bit intimidating - since I don't know anything about IT, I'll essentially be entrusting the nuts and bolts to hired hands.  I have all the ideas in the world related to the product itself, supplemental services, and other oddities, but no knowledge of how to do it.

What's worse, I don't even know what I would need to look for in an IT professional's qualifications.

Financially its not the best time AT ALL to be pursuing this, but I think if I can get the right knowledge foundation, I might prepare a business plan and take out a loan (if the cost assessment deems that necessary).  I know it doesnt tkae much to get a site up - but I'd want it to be quality before it went online.  The potential market is enormous - so quality is important.  Industry-leader is a necessity.  Gotta come out first and come out strong.

Can I get any more vague?  Yeah.

Should be interesting?  An old roommate runs his own online mktg consulting business & also is owner of a 50,000+ car enthusiast forum ---- so rest assured i'll be tapping that resource

so, whats the point of this thread? your idea is vague, and there is nothing for anyone to comment on or any way to offer you advice.

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

"People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

I was high when I made it.  I'll be updating it as things progress --- but you can just delete it if you think its offensive or in the way or anything.

But, I will say, in my own defense, that I think the idea is legit and I do plan on pursuing it.  I have a meeting set up for next week

Lets just say it'll replace something that each and every one of your parents (and later in life, yourselves) seem to have.

They always say, before you put a lot of money into a startup, go find five customers who will commit to buying your product or service assuming you're able to deliver on time and on spec. If you can't manage that, your market may not be as big as you think, or your idea may still need work.

Thanks for the tip.  Still a long way off from anything tangible.  Just trying to formulate the best way to process this idea into a tangible product.

My technical web knowledge is very limited, so lots of coordination will be needed to get it off the ground.  Meeting w/ a CS/IT guy tomorrow and my good friend on fri.

So:  as of today I have officially doubled the number of people who are aware of my business plan.  Previously just my girl and myself knew of it --- and she said it was a great idea.  Sadly, she loves me to death, and would say any idea was great --- so i was a bit skeptical as to whether or not it was viable.

So I had a meeting today w/ my classmate who is into IT/CS and was pretty nervous heading into it.  I thought my plan was solid, but since I hadn't had any objective critique yet - i wasn't convinced.

LUckily, i sat down, explained it, and he seemed very into it.  Thinks the market exists, thinks the idea wouldn't require too much to get off the ground, and is officiall on board.  We shook on it!

With that positive response under my belt i picked up the phone and called my dad.  The one man who I knew would tell me it was a shite idea if it turns out it was.  Sure enough, he was supportive.  Offered some good ideas on how to expand it.  Some words of advice, of caution, and of encouragement.

I've got a meeting with  my old roommate (who is the intenret marketing/advertising/development consultant) on friday afternoon.  Im pretty psyched!

:omgawesome:  Also scared.

This thread has not paid off.

Could you be a little less secretive about what the hell you want to do.

There should be no reason to be afraid of shroomery poid's trying to rip your shit.

Lol I was entirely unaware that threads required the ability to generate a value stream.  This thread is here because I want to keep track of what i'm doing.

I'dlike this idea to get a little more off the ground before I go posting it all over the intrawebz.  I know this is just the shroomery, and its not exactly full of web-entrepreneurs who will steal my idea or anything like that.  But its the internet, it has no walls, and the idea hasn't been done yet so I'd like to maintain  secrecy for a bit longer

Your mom is my primary target market.  Not a joke or insult.  If you dont think this thread is worth reading, then dont come in it.  I won't be providing details until i see fit.

See, if I found your threads not worth reading I wouldn't post in it. Problem is I do generally enjoy your threads and want to find out what the hell this is!

And if you also tossed us a few crumbs you might get some more crumb specific tips and advice.

Not trying to be a dick, but I wouldnt put too much stock in whether an IT person or my dad says about my business plan.

Now, your old roommate is who I would be paying a lot of attention too. Somebody with a business background.

Aww well thanks man.

Sorry I can't throw out so many crumbs.  Its just a really interesting idea that I think hasn't been capitalized on yet.  It has to do with family.  Your mom will be my customer.  Maybe your grandma.  Eventually, you will.

But thats pretty much all I'll say until we get things rollin'.  DOnt worry, you'll find out soon enough.  ANd its not like its super-novel or outrageous or anything.  Just a lil' niche that hasn't been filled.

Its ok, you're not being a dick!  I just didnt give you full disclosure regarding those individual's qualifications:
-The IT person is also in my MBA program.  Business knowledge + It knowledge
-Dad worked marketing for Meryll Lynch & Morgan Stanley-Dean Witter for most of my childhood before he started his own marketing/communications company when we moved to VA cuz of my moms job
-And I did MGMT/Econ undergrad, and MA Econ & MBA in grad school
-My old roommate is the wiz.  I just logged onto the site he started in 10th grade and there's: There are currently 444 users online. 214 members and 230 guests on his site

SO its not like me and my two random buddies are throwing shit together.  Its not like I have Bill Gates & Zukerberg under my wings but we have knowledge.
