sounds like nonsense to me ol Red. If someone is pointing you in a direction they are likely doing it because they think that's where truth lies.
truth is everywhere, not a direction each direction has something you may require, money honey funny
the mantras are steering things truth is not a direction it is an ideal quality, like perfection, infinity, nothingness, eternity, silence

If you've ever been in love with someone you would know that you can notice their flaws and still call them perfect.
Been there, never did that. That's nuts dude.

Truth is a movement. You can’t capture it, contain it, give expression to it, or use it to advance your interests. The moment you capture it, it ceases to be the truth. What is the truth for me is something that cannot, under any circumstances, be communicated to you. The certainty here cannot be transmitted to another. For this reason the whole guru business is absolute nonsense. This has always been the case, not just now. Your self-denial is to enrich the priests. You deny yourself your basic needs while that man travels in a Rolls Royce car, eating like a king, and being treated like a potentate. He, and the others in the holy business, thrive on the stupidity and credulity of others. The politicians, similarly, thrive on the gullibility of man. It is the same everywhere.

"How people can take an all love view of the Universe and claim it to be this basically benign loving force for good when almost everything we know and see about nature is violent, bloody and competitive and based in struggle?"
because IGNORANCE IS BLISS.
seriously though, i just think most peoples views on nature are greatly misconstrued because of how the 'media' tries to make it be some great entity when in reality 'nature' is nothing more than a label.

Further proving my point that we experience reality differently. I'm glad to hear you don't find love everywhere. It would be boring if we all thought the same.

Not sure if this would be the appropriate area to discuss but the other week in the pub I asked a question regarding peace that should have actually been posted here. However someone theorized how it would need to start in the youth education system maybe a peace class. Then I ran across this short lecture/talk about just that happening in this teachers' 4th grade class.
"...he explains how his World Peace Game engages schoolkids, and why the complex lessons it teaches..."
