ordering spicy food on a 1-10 scale in a thai restaraunt
    #14541259 - 05/31/11 03:34 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

this applies to other cuisines where they are known to eat their food extremely spicy.

I'm totally convinced that when you order at a thai restaraunt and they ask you how spicy you want it on a 1-10 scale, they have a completely different scale for people that aren't thai, because I never order less than an 8 and the food is rarely as spicy as I expect it to be. some day when I feel daring, I'm going to ask them to make it like they do in thailand and sweat my balls off. my dad tells me about this thai girl he knew that was eating some homemade larb and asked if he could try have a bite since he loves larb...

...and it was :hotidea:

anyone else suspect this? I think they consider us pussies, which we probably are.

Hell yeah I know what you are talking about. I love spicy food and when I go to restaurants and ask to have it made the spiciest they can make it is rarely as spicy as I like it.

spicy food

1. Weight loss. Spicy foods are said to help rev up your metabolism and the faster your metabolism, the more weight you will lose. Furthermore, studies have shown that people who eat spicy foods eat smaller portions which can cut your calories way back.

2. Cancer Prevention: Scientists have discovered that capsaicin (found in jalepeno peppers) attacks and kills cancer cells. The way it does this is by attacking the mitochondria which are the powerhouses of cells.

3. Improved digestion. Even though spicy food has a bad reputation for causing heart burn, it has been shown that the spiciness stimulates stomach secretions. This in turn will increase blood flow to the stomach and even increase the mucous lining and combat ulcers. If you do find you get heartburn from spicy foods, try taking an antacid relief tablet which will neutralize acids in the stomach.

4. Improved circulation. The spicier the food, the more it increases your blood flow, gets your heart pumping, and raises the body’s temperature. If you live in a hot climate this can actually make you feel cooler by making you sweat which cools the body.

5. Improved sleep patterns. Australian researchers have found that people who regularly consumed spicy meals fell asleep more easily, had healthier sleep patterns, and even woke up easier and had more energy throughout the day.

Hell the only reason people that eat a ton of spicy foods eat less is because they know its got to come out the other end at some point.

I love me some XXX hot wings though.  :homerdrool:

I have had this exact same suspicion!  Whenever I go out for Thai, and they ask me how hot on a scale of 1-10, I tell them I want it as hot as they can possibly make it.  Sometimes I say 20.  It is NEVER as hot as I can make it at home by just adding a few fresh chilis.  One time the server brought out my dish with a side of that lame hot sauce that looks like pepper seeds soaking in oil, telling me that the cook didn't want to waste food and that I could spice it up to my own tastes.  That sauce isn't even hot!

It really grinds my gears!

whenever i order mine "hot", they always make sure to ask me if i have had it that way before. i always end up shitting fire for two days straight though and fucking regret it. the place i go to definately makes their food as spicy as you order it, they just try to persuade dumbass white people like myself not to get it.

Gastritis:
A surplus intake of spicy food can cause Gastritis. It’s an inflammation in the stomach lining. It is usually triggered by infections, caused due to eating spicy food. Chronic gastritis can produce ulcers by allowing the stomachs own acids to eat away at the lining, but one has to go through pain while eating food.

Acid reflux (heart burn):
Spicy food can trigger acid reflux. All that burping experience after a nice meal isn’t a result of bad manners; it’s the body not being able to cope with all that spicy cuisine. Chronic acid reflux disease can also lead to esophageal cancer, but only in rare cases. Cutting down on peppery cooking is a good first step to reducing this risk. Acid reflux, especially at night, can also erode teeth.

Causes Insomnia:
Spicy food is bad for sleep too. Because of the simple reason that spicy food raises body temperature. If one happens to consume something zesty before going to bed, it can disrupt sleep. The first cycle of sleep is particularly sensitive to acidic food and hence may cause insomnia.

Damage to taste buds:
After a certain period it’s true, that people do feel less sizzling after years of spicy abuse, but not because the body gets “used” to the sensation but because their sense of sensation suffers deterioration.

Burning sensation on skin:
Chili peppers produce a burning sensation on the skin and mucous membranes, including the inside of the mouth, may even cause blistering of the lips and palate. Though in rare cases such cases arise but one should always be cautious in eating SPICY FOOD regularly. They should only be used for changing taste not as a regular food habit.

I always order a 10 and you're right it's never hot enough so I dump massive amounts of chili sauce on every bite.

I think I might have sabotaged myself last time. I ordered some tom yum soup as an appetizer and ordered it a 10, and while I still think it was probably tame by authentic standards, it was definitely hot enough to satisfy me, and right when the waitress came by to ask if it was hot enough, I said yes but simultaneously inhaled some chile so it probably looked to her like it was too hot for me, and when the main course came out it was pathetically weak even though I ordered a 10 for that too.

I can if I eat a ton of it, but I'm pretty much the same way. I know at least around here it isn't uncommon for local pubs and the like to have 'special wing contests' where they make them ridiculously fucking hot and you have to eat like 3 in 10min and if you make it you win a cash prize. That's my goal!

1. Kill self preparing
2. Eat crazy hot food
3. ????
4. Profit!
