E-prime: eliminating the word "is" from language
    #14539573 - 05/31/11 07:10 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering what kind of responses I might get from this video:

RAW thinks we need to eliminate the word "is" from our language, that it creates philosophical problems and develops bad habits of thinking. It's interesting to think about the influence of language on the boundaries of thought. Just in the way people voice their predilections based on drug experiences via trip reports, do you think by speaking about distortions in reality as "is" would lead one to come to more dualist or physicalist conclusions about their experiences?

On one hand, a person might feel enveloped by the personal connection they felt and conceptualize a more spiritual definition. On the other hand, I know people who see how easily chemicals influence their mind, and conclude that their mind must be physical. Obviously you need reasons for beliefs (I'm much more for reasons lol), but have you ever entertained the notion of accepting ideas just for the purpose of discovering what may be born out of it?  Refuting certain beliefs you have just to place them in context? And...does anything good ever actually come out of that?

And if you this doesn't interest you, the videos worth watching if only for the dude's loopy behavior.. most likely you know he's perpetually on something..

Spanish doesn't eliminate 'is', but it does separate two distinc meanings of it.
"Ser" and "estar" both mean "to be" and can be conjugated as "__ is". But they have different semantics.

Ooh i didn't even put the idea in the context of different languages..there's my egoist perception for ya. I imagine that, along with a multitude of complex and overlapping reasons, it is possible for people who speak different languages to formulate ideas differently as well. The example I'm thinking of is German where the verb is at the end of the sentence. You have to trace and listen to all the concepts before learning how a person is representing them in modality and action. Perhaps this forces more imaginative thinking? Do you think that the use of conjugation where verbs have attachable semantic elements, so to speak, allows more flexibility and lucid quality to concepts than English?

And I have never gone as far as to remove "is" myself. I'm not sure I believe it's completely necessary and I find it only further confuses the line between normative and descriptive truths for me. I do like the idea of minimizing the occurrence of rash conclusions based on the "is" truth of immediate appearances. I used to play my own devils advocate but, in practice, would later realized it more often did more harm than good lol.

Go get a copy of Language, Though, and Reality by Benjamin Whorf.

Soon. You'll be glad you did.

"The example I'm thinking of is German where the verb is at the end of the sentence."
No it's not. It's like in English. Subject, verb, object. But 'is' just fills the spaces where one can use any other verb. I think this idea can provide a way to a better expression and clearer thinking

Note that the 'ebonic dialect' of English does the same thing with is.
If you were to say "He sick" or "He am sick" that would have a different meaning than "He be sick".

Are you saying that those who use the ebonic dialect are able to bend English in ways others aren't? To me, it's just incorrect syntax lol

It's not so much 'incorrect' as a sub-dialect with internal consistency.
Someone who speaks both ebonic dialect and mainstream american english has more options for expression then someone who speaks only one version.

The idea is retarded.
When you say it is interesting , i understand that it IS interesting to you.
You don't have to emphasize that for me.

Why would we modify language itself in order to accommodate the idiots ?

Makes me think of this :

Holy shit that guy is a total basket case

(switching to E-prime)

He seems pretty right though. I would think this clearly demonstrates the power of truth to madden.
