If there was one city in the US where I would not want to be a police officer, I think you pinpointed it.
Why is that?
If there is one thing you need to know about being a cop in chicago...
don't.
but why?
That makes me want to be a cop in Chicago. Is it dangerous? Do people hate cops there? or is it simply because you live there...

I think it's because it's probably dangerous as fuck. Chicago can be pretty gritty in some parts. Not to mention cold as balls.
I say do it if you think you can do some good. More good cops is a good thing. How do you feel about upholding laws you don't agree with personally and morally? How do you feel about non-violent victimless "crimes"?

I feel like I could uphold laws that I dont agree with. If I became a cop I would have to. But there is a grey area. Like the example I described in my initial post when the cop simply let me go. He knew I was an innocent college kid with a joint.
I think you have to but up with bullshit for any job. The job I most recently worked - we had a young boy who was autistic. He liked to eat only fried foods that were processed (pizza rolls, chicken pattys, cheese sticks, etc..). They said he wouldnt eat anything else. I think if they stopped feeding him that crap for 3 days he would eat something decent like a shake and bake porkchop and corn. I didnt believe in how they treated him, but I had to deal with it because it was my job.

This.
I had a cop tell me this when I said I wanted to join the force but would never arrest someone for drugs. Ever.

Depends on the department. Many just make you have a psych evaluation. Do you know how many narcotics officers used to be drug dealers?

Yes, I believe Chicago has (one of?) the highest murder and crime rates in the country. I imagine that there is a good chance you will get stabbed or shot or killed in the line of duty.
If I was a cop, I'd work somewhere mellow, would be lenient to non-violent offenders, and wait for that fat pension.

i dunno if anyone has mentioned it yet, but you can't become a cop if you've smoked weed in the last like...3 years I think? Also, you'll have to take a lie detector test and they WILL ask you about your drug use and you will probably fail hard because...well...duh...
good luck though man

Guess that's why most cops are complete pricks when it comes to having a small amount of marijuana on you... to them it's just another drug cause they've never tried it themselves.

the next time I get pulled over I'd love for it to be a cop like you, but while more chill cops is a good thing, you're still essentially an armed government henchman and whether you disagree with a law or not, you're still gonna be called on to enforce it.
"The function of that police action, those interventions in Central America and the Middle East, the function is system sustaining. It is to maintain that overall system! And you don't look at the particular cost. I could demonstrate to you that every single bank robbery, that in every single case practically, the cost of the police was more than the actual money that the robbers took from the bank. Does that mean, 'Oh, you see, there's really no economic interest involved, then. They're not protecting the banks. The police are just doing this because they're on a power trip, or they're macho, or they're control freaks, that's why they do it.' No, of course it's an economic... of course they're defending the banks. Of course, because if they didn't stop that bank robbery, regardless of the cost, this could jeopardize the entire banking system. You see, there are people who believe that the function of the police is to fight crime. And that's not true; the function of the police is social control and protection of property."

Crazy people pass lie detector tests all the time. You can do it!
I've heard you have to visualize the words you are saying so that you believe the lie too. Although I think the whole situation would sketch me out. I'd probably be sweaty and anxious just going into the interview.
