Becoming a cop

I have been thinking about career opportunities and police work came into my head. I know tons of you probably want to bash the hell out of me for posting this but in reality I think police are a good thing.
It sucks weed is illegal but on the other hand police have helped me out a few times. One being when my identity was stolen. The man who stole my identity was trying to take out a 20,000 dollar loan with me as the cosigner. One police officer helped me hunt this man down and eventually he was arrested.
They also have helped me on smaller occasions. One time mistakenly parked my car in front of someone driveway and they had it towed. I couldn't locate my car so I asked a cop for help. He drove me around to all the towing places until we found my car.
One cop also took pity on me once before. I was narced out for possession of weed. In the barracks the cop listened to what I had to say and withdrew the charges and let me go free.
I feel like there are good cops out there and there is a real chance to do good in peoples lives. I think a city would be a possibility. There is alot of terrible crime and I think a guy like me could do some good.
I also feel like there are bad cops out there. Which makes me think that they need as many decent recruits as possible.
Any thoughts on becoming a cop? The pay? The process?
My records are clean, I have a degree, and I am very fit.

Be the change you want to see in the world.
Of course there are some awful cops out there, but it's just like in everything else. I've been arrested smoking a spliff by the cops many times, and they let me go every time, it's all about knowing how to talk to them. ( I don't live in the USA though, guess it would have been different there )
If that's what you really want to do, just do it Don't pay attention to what haters say. And it'd be really nice having more cops like you out there !

If there was one city in the US where I would not want to be a police officer, I think you pinpointed it.

Only problem I have with cops is them arresting people over a plant that's never killed a single person... As long as you're cool with weed you're cool with me bro. Cop or not...

I really feel sorry for you Americans. In here it's all about the way you talk to them, if you wear your innocent face and swear not to do it again they'll most likely just take your stash and keep it for themselves. Oh and you'll never end up handcuffed for something like weed/hash

i think its great your thinking about becoming a cop and dont have that dumb-ass stigma for the uniform
authority can be bad
enforcing safety and security for those in need-ALWAYS good

I thought about this career. My problem with it is that I would be corrupt as hell, because there are so many rules that I don't agree with. It would make me insane, because I would have to ignore what is right and then I would start ignoring what is right in other areas of my life. The police system is pretty much fucked. It's about making money just like any bussiness and I have a huge problem with that.

Well the first thing you want to do is go to police academy college and inform yourself, grab a flyer that explains the process, what education you need and some info on the fitness test.
I suggest you start getting fit right away cause I wouldn't be surprised if you would need to pass a fitness test before they even consider you.
After that I would suggest you get a head start and read state law and federal law books.
Of course you will be tested for drugs and have a criminal record check.
I also believe you need a few hours of community/charity work because they will ask for good references.
Good luck!
