Haha OK, I would be at least a bit scared if he had a knife, but cold weapon defense is kinda the first thing they teach you in most self-defense classes. I can easily defend myself from idiots vielding a pen knife. A large hunting knife could be a problem. And if he started to slash around with a kukri, I'd run like hell. But mostly I was thinking about drunken idiots and junkies who flash an 3 inch blade. But I'd crap my pants if someone pulled out a gun on me, that's what I really wanted to say.

(I hate that the US is the only place that doesn't fully accept the metric system) I'm 82kg 1.8m so I'm around average for my age but I really think fighting/ self defense is more about attitude and knowledge.
I took aikido a couple years ago and learned so much. Maybe not enough to put what I learned into a real situation but I've seen a 65 year old man who is shorter and skinnier than me, totally own a guy twice my size.
That might be a bad example since he was my sensei but I saw plenty of other shit that shows knowledge beats brute force every time.

my brother and I were talking about this last night, he mentioned he knew what it was like to look down the barrel, I said I did as well, he asked when and I told him about having a party and my neighbor comes busting through my door talking about someone trying to kill him, I bolted out the door and down the stairs and as I hit the bottom I was staring at the barrel of a gun, out of my moth came 'you need to put that away' he lipped off and I said 'put it away before you get hurt'. he put the gun away and we resolved the issue, my brother said he remembered that, I forgot he was even there but he was right behind my best friend
my brother had someone bum rush him when he answered his door, home invasion, they wanted his truck, told him to sit in a chair and they were going to tape him up, he told them to fuck off, if they wanted his truck they'd have to shoot him, the guy hit him with the gun and he shoved the guy and said "shoot me mother fucker, it's the only way you'll get out of here now", the guy's accomplice started to panic, insisted they needed to leave and my brother kept talking shit, told them that if they kill him and take the truck then the cops wont just be looking for the truck, they'll be looking for a couple of murder suspects, he told them that it's not the cops they'd have to worry about after they killed him, that there will be someone to avenge his death and it's not going to be pretty, that they'll be gotten too even in prison... the accomplice freaked, said my brother must be well connected and bolted out of the house, the guy with the gun backed out and ran
my brother's reasoning for all the shit talking, if he lets them tape him to the chair, they have all the time in the world to do what ever they want, they can even kill him without any fear of resistance, you honestly dont know how you're going to react in any situation until it presents it's self and my suggestion is never be compliant, if they're going to kill you they're most likely going to start with that
or maybe it all boils down to my brother and I not being the sharpest bulbs in the box

This.
If I was being approached by someone who seemed intent on harming me and was definitely physically capable of disabling me, I would find the nearest solid object and bring it across their vital areas. Probably start with stomach, knees, ankles, wrists, and if they persist, a smack across the dome. I feel like my mini-tripod I always carry with me would make a good defense weapon. I can kick (if I whip it right the legs come extend) the legs out so it stands 18" and its metal. The end that screws into the camera hurts quite a bit if you tap it against you.
In the past, when I have been scared I tend to go into blackout fear. If I feel like I can take the opponent, I fight. I don't realize I'm doing it, either. Its just suddenly coming to while punching someone in the face multiple times. =x
If flight were the most logical option, I am a VERY fast sprinter, I'm really agile, and I can climb most anything super fast.
I think about these situations a lot because I often am alone when I'm out.

most people with a knife dont know what they're doing either, the gun is as easy as point and click, either way the odds of you getting hurt are there, a knife it's more likely, a kangaroo kick to the hip joint or the pelvis puts most people out of the fight and it usually give you enough distance to keep from getting cut

I've always felt more frightened by knives as well.
I've always felt that if someone had a gun and intended on using it, they would if I talked shit to them. Why wield a gun if you don't have the capability to use it? If someone is threatening me with it, they better do something to back it up.If they didn't to start with and they're just bluffing....maybe luck would work out. So I'd probably talk shit, let them shoot me, fuck it. I'd rather get shot from the start than to immediately accept a victim role and be abducted or fuck knows what. If you have a gun mother fucking use it now. Who knows how I'd actually react though.
Knives are just...personal. If you're close enough to see a knife, you're too close. Knifes slash, guns penetrate and fuck up things internally. When I think about it, I'd rather have my insides rearranged than gutted out. I also have noooo idea how to disable someone with a knife besides a kick or pressure points depending on how they come at me. I've been shown how to disarm someone with a gun, though. And again, I'd rather get shot than stabbed.

Can I see your credentials that you apparently wouldnt be scared if he had a knife? Krav Maga Instructor certificate or psychiatric evaluation demonstrating Antisocial Personality Disorder will do.
If someone with a bit of skill has a knife you're gonna be slashed and stabbed man, a lot, unless your Martial Arts skills are way way up there.
this is a good point. fear is normal, any foolish person who claims they don't get scared is lying or just trying to look macho.
Using the feeling of fear can be benificial. it takes practice. lots of practice.
that being said, where is this fight taking place? If the attacker is in a bar, in a park, on the street? do you see the first hit coming? all that makes a difference. What is around you to help defend yourself? if your in a bar, pick up a chair to keep distance between you and the knife till you can get it out of their hands. In the street/park can you find a stick/pole to help keep that distance.
Also, there is nothing wrong with running away. if the dude wants to rob you, throw your wallet in a direction where he will have to move away from you, or at least distract him enouh to get a good heads start. maybe brace yourself to hit him back suddenly if he chases you.

muscle isnt what you want, you need strength and speed, you need fast reflexes and to think fast on your feet, if someone starts talking shit and it looks like it's going to be a fight, you need to react to what ever the guy does, if the hand goes for a pocket, trap the hand while it's there because the odds are he's after a knife, headbutt him in the face as soon as you grab his wrist, that little bit gives you the advantage and from there it's easy to take him down
if you're like me, I put my hands out in a defensive posture and try and walk away, if they persist in trying to start the shit I'll drop it on them and when they're down, that's the best time to kick them, it's easier and the last thing you want is for the guy to get up more pissed off, you want him to stay down of his own accord or you want him to be unable to get back up
