ID REQUEST - Field Mushrooms, AUS
    #14539084 - 05/31/11 02:48 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys!

Found plenty of actives this seasons, hurrah!!  But, i've been looking to spread my mycological wings outward a bit, and ID more edible varieties I can incorporate into my diet! WOOO!

And, out the front of my house, a bunch of Field Mushrooms (I think!) have been growing!

Looking to confirm before I ingest!

Habitat:
Amongst long grass, beside a road.

Gills:
Darker brown in older life, lighter pink colour in the younger varieties.

Stem:
5-10cms, fairly thick (1cm diameter{ish}), has a veil, that I suppose is the end product of a cover over the gills in early life.  White-brownish in colour.

Cap:
Ranging from 4-10cms, whiteish brown in colour, bruising mostly dark, sometimes notice slight yellowing (see pictures) close to the edges of the cap.  Concave

Spore print color:
Ranging from a pinker colour in the younger varieties to a dark brown colour in the older.  Very THICK!

Bruising:
Mostly dark colours, but on some, a slight yellow near the edge of the cap

Other information:
Older varieties have that mushroomy smell, but younger varieties have little/no smell.  From my readings in descriptions of Field Mushrooms and their similar, but non-edible cousins, I feel like I have delicious Field Mushrooms, but I want to make sure!  My concern was on the slight yellow bruising on the edges of some of the caps.

Agaricus sp. If it doesn't bruise yellow (check the base of the stem) and doesn't smell bad, then it should be edible.

Some of the yellow stainers are edible, check the odor.

Be careful with the yellow stainers - probably going to give you a nasty case of gut-rot. Agaricus xanthodermus is toxic

he said it bruised yellow so it's probably xanthodermus. check the smell to confirm, if it's edible it should smell like storebought mushroom if not edible a chemical/phenolic odour
