Not real sure about these ...
    #1453818 - 04/13/03 12:18 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hello all.
New to this stuff.
I heard this guy talking about something in a few pictures he had. He said something about PF tek ... BRF ... and was worried about contamination. He knows one jar got a spot of green (bye-bye) ... However some others seemed brownish. He claimed that the brownish were maztapecs.
in 5 of six jars did this...

He also claimed that 6 jars of PF Classics innoculated at the same time using the same method looked like this...

He's happy about those.

However ... Do you think the maztapecs might just have brown in there mycelium?
Or are these toast?

Thanks.

I think they are fine, Wait for MAIA(Hope thats right) or the other mods opinions, the brown could just be the Brown rice flour

that middle picture seems to have a little green in the darker spots, might be something to keep an eye on.

As for the other two are the dark spots spreading at all or is that all there is?
If it isn't really spreading and it does look brown/yellowish i might say its just mycl piss. But yea that middle one is the only one i;d be worryed about

The greenish spots are condensation spots of water that came out greenish in the picture. He will keep an eye on it though.

The brownish places came out as soon as mycelium started to grow...kinda grew that color. The whiter parts kinda just butted up against the brownish, and they happily just kept going. There isn't much going on in the last few days. pretty stable. He took them out of the dark, flipped them upside down, and let them get some indirect light for a few days.

His terrarium is built and probably birthday around 4/14 - 4/15 ... Waiting a few extra days, figure the longer the better... Unless I see pins - then they come out immediately.

And to be a little more detailed...The color is almost flesh colored, not brown.

just to be a little extra safe I'd say that when your friend opens the jars, open the ones with the spots away from everything else, do the smell test.

Hold the jar away from you, and with the other hand "waft" the smell of the jar towards you, don't just stick your friends nose in there. If it smells like crap or just nasty, toss it. If it doesn't smell bad then i would do a small cutting and check the inside.
If everything looks ok then go for it.

First pic and third are probably ok as they look they staled due to lack of air exchange. Flipping the jars and untaping the holes is a good idea.
Second pic looks like a lost jar, those little specs don't look good at all.
Fourth pic, the brown dots need a close examination, keep and eye on it. You'll probably have to cut the cake to see if it hasn't spread inside.

OK Sounds like everything may not be lost.
The 'specs' in pic #4 is just the vermiculite...no problem their.
Jars are flipped and tape removed. They should be ready to birth.

What are the chances of contamination if the cakes never touch, but are in the same terrarium?

A question though ... If this guy cuts the cake, can it still be used as a cake or will it became a casing.

He was trying to just try cakes since it was his first time.

BTW One of his brown/white jars developed something new in it today.
Not real sure what it is, looks like a bean that was cut in half, then smashed up against the glass. He'll probably take a series of pictures to document what happens.

Many, don't mix them.

You decide. If you put it inside a pan and you add a top layer then you can call it casing, if you just cut the cake in half it would be a cake cut in half  .... i would go with a casing myself.

I over heard the guy tonight singing Happy Birthday.

He birthed his 6 PF classics. All seemed good. Couple of pins started in the jars, very nice aroma.

The Maztapecs ... Well ...
Out of the four best jars; He cut them in half, In his opinion They could half colonized longer, growth seemed to stopped. A little white throughout, the cake was very firm. The smell was nice, earthy. No notice of mold. He thinks the brown could have been lack of H2O, which might explain the halted growth. Any spots that looked bad he just cut off. The rest were crumbled up into 4 trays as casings. Verm bottom and top. He will continue the experiment to see what becomes of these.

The one jar with the bean looking thing is still left to colonize a few more days ... I think the maz's colonize slower than PF classics. Also the bean spot looks like a shroom growing in the jar (smashed) but seems to big, considering didn't even notice a pin.

All in all, He is enthusiastic about this first try. Get's to try cakes and casings. Even if it doesn't work out, he is having fun. He also has 12 more jars of PF classics in an incubator at the moment (wink).

Thanks for the information, and cross your fingers for me.
