Tips for a good trip

If you want the tips, scroll; if you want my credentials, read.
Heya, fellow shroomies. You don't know me, but I've done my fair share of tripping. Once a week for the past year and more, in fact, with no plans on stopping that. More as special occasion required, less should necessity require it, but averaging that. And in all circumstances: outside, indoors, day, night, on hikes, at concerts, for entire weekends at festivals, but mostly at home.
I'm also one of Erowid's top reviewers, so I've probably read up more on this stuff than a lot of people. I'm familiar with most of it, though first-hand, mostly mushrooms with some cacti, blotter, mimosa, rue, MDMA, DXM (don't underestimate it), and lots and lots of weed.
I've used psychedelics therapeutically and recreationally and feel I've benefited from both. I also know a fair share about meditation and the mindsets that can be reached using either.
I really love tripping and I want you to, as well. I want you to have a great time, spread the news, and help dispel the myths. I also don't want you doing anything stupid that could get tripping out of the greyish area it is now and put it firmly in the black.
If you trip a lot, cool. You've got a handle on things already, probably. These tips are mainly for those who haven't tripped yet, or who only do it once-in-a-while and want to make it exceptional. Hope someone out there benefits.
_______________________________
My tips for a great trip (no particular order):
1. DON'T DRIVE!!! DON'T ENDANGER ANY OTHER PEOPLE!!!
2. Do your research! The fact that you're reading this is cool. Not because I'm awesome, but because it means you're looking into it. Don't just go by what a friend of a guy might've said. There's a whole lot of information out there. This site's a great wealth of information: use the search! Erowid's another great source. I'd recommend knowing what you're getting into, personally.
3. Be comfortable. Wear comfortable clothes. Don't be in a situation that you won't feel completely comfortable in. Don't have people around that you aren't totally comfortable with.
4. Do it when you're already in a good mood.
5. Have a sober sitter. I'm a loner, so I'm also pro solitary tripping. It's all about what you're comfortable with. However, if it's your first time, you might want to have someone there you can trust to remind you of the way things actually are when you're seeing them quite differently.
**Sober sitters/non-trippers** Do NOT fuck with trippers! It is a very cruel thing to do to a person, will ruin his trip, and might end up doing some psychological damage. These are somewhat fragile mindsets we're dealing with here, and they ought to be treated that way.
6. Have a clear mind and a free day. Get all of your stuff done before you start. You don't want anything looming in the future that you'll have to take care of. Makes things less enjoyable and could make you anxious.
7. Clean up beforehand. If you want to spend the whole day watching CEVs, this won't matter as much. But if you're going to be looking around, tripping on the sights, watching at a bunch of trash and filth is a good way to set your head wrong.
8. Have a playlist ready with your favorite music. Know that you could be paying more attention to the lyrics, so you might want to know what they are beforehand.
9. Don't call unwanted attention to yourself. If you're around mixed company and unsure of how to behave, just look at how other people are behaving and do that. You might want to limit interactions altogether. I personally find speaking with people can be a bit difficult, as I think one thing and say another.
10. Don't eat too much beforehand. Something light a few hours beforehand has never done me wrong, but you'll want a fairly empty stomach for best results.
11. Close your eyes and take a few moments (doesn't have to be long) and concentrate on your breathing. Just feel the breath going through you and watch whatever's happening behind your closed eyes.
12. Do it on a cloudy day, if you can. Put on some sunglasses and watch the clouds for a while.
____
More specifically, for shrooms:
I like getting to +++, which means I normally take 2.5 - 3 grams (110 lightweight that I am). I also smoke pot throughout, but I don't know about what you can do.
I like taking 2/3 of the dose at once, then the other 1/3 2-3 hours in. I find it extends the trip a bit, seven to eight hours as opposed to five or six. I might not reach as high a peak, but I have fun for longer. It's up to you.
If taking less than 2 grams, I recommend soaking it in cranberry juice for a couple of hours. Cranberry because lemon burns on the way down. 100%, not from concentrate. Either powder the shrooms or soak them whole, pull them out, and eat them with something (drinking the juice to wash it all down). I find leaving them whole and eating them with the drink extends things a bit, time-wise.
Syrian rue's an okay extender, too, but you need to research MAOIs before you start taking it. It makes me nauseous, personally, when shrooms do not themselves.
I don't like the taste of mushrooms, so I usually powderize them and add them to peanut butter. You can add them to whatever you want to, but just don't eat too much of whatever it is. They can be a bit chewy, so powderizing can be helpful. Any decent coffee grinder will do.
Feel free to add more or ask any questions.
Have a great trip!

Do you know a good way to powderize without a coffee grinder?

No coffee grinder would depend on how dry your shrooms are. Mortar and pestle would be best, putting them in a bag and hammering would probably work alright. I've torn them into smaller bits by hand when nothing was available, and it worked alright. Not down to powder, but more manageable.

I work with dogs, so you could ask me about them. Don't know why I would've posted that in the "psychedelic experience" forum, though :P.
Animal tip? If you have a pet, hang out with it and run your fingers through its fur (assuming it has that).

13. Make a good mental note of the time of ingestion. This is something I like doing, so that if or when I start to get too far out there, I can remind myself that in another four hours (or however long depending on the substance used) I'll be back to my normal reality. This is especially helpful when undergoing intense high-dose trips where it becomes difficult to grasp reality.

A good suggestion. But on a truly high dose trip, you're not really gonna remember that you're gonna come down in x hours or that you're on drugs or what significance time carries or the time of ingestion or...

^ True. When you're completely destroyed, you're not going to remember. I've had some unbelievably intense trips on 2C-E, DPT, and DMT where I had little knowledge of the fact that I had taken a drug, or at what time of day.
But, you can still have a trip that would be considered a high dose trip (5g shrooms for example, or 3-5 hits of strong acid) and be able to keep these thoughts in mind. Up to a certain point of course.

Good advice
Don't redose.... Pick something... Pre measure.... Stick to that...
Don't freak out if you hear sirens. They are not out after you.
Don't freak out if Mormons come to the door. Just answer the door naked.
Make some tea before tripping. Drink it and water... Try not to dehydrate
Do not cook, use sharp knives, repair things, run the garbage disposal or go hunting during your trip
Get some frozen popsicles
Becareful with alcohol. I do not feel the effects while tripping, but will the next day i will if i drink too much. Get some low alcohol beer to drink...
Relax.... You will come back from where you go
If things start to head south... Try a change, music, visuals, outside/inside...

Cool additions!
Also, if things get too weird for you, just remind yourself that you've taken something that will wear off eventually. I found this very helpful during my first few trips, especially during the come-up.

I like using the underside of a CD. Lie down with one eye right next to the colors and the other looking at the room. Soon the whole room is swirling color. Awesome.
Candle flames are also great.

Yeah but the rest of the world is probably annoyed that you're calling them up tripping face
seriously though. Cellphones are just BAD NEWS! Just wait until your girlfriend decides to flip out on you, or you get a call saying that your parents just got in a car wreck, or from your boss asking you to take an extra shift the next morning. Or how about when you end up taking WAY too much and you end up calling the cops on yourself! Or calling your parents and telling them that you're Jesus.... etc etc.
It may be entertaining, but the risks really outweigh the benefits.

Not to hijack your thread just thought I'd contribute my view so we could make a super guide! i like cow poo said: Plan a journey into the woods with your best/most trusted friend. Bring with you the following items: 1. Backpack 2. SURPLUS of water and food 3. A sweatband 4. Hiking boots 5. MP3 player 6. A Map 7. Hiking stick IMPORTANT NOTES -Make sure your friend is sober enough to watch over you (hiking can be dangerous) -Bring more water and food then you think you'll need (trust me you don't want to run out of water in the middle of the woods) -Sweatband- minimizes sweat in eyes -Hiking boots- serve to support your ankles and minimize risks of injury -Map- so you don't get lost Planned activities
Hiking- to a special place in the forest while on shrooms can be an extremely rewarding experience. I recommend hiking to a stream, pond, or lake because nothing feels better then dipping into cold water on a hot summer day.
Photography: Taking pictures of beautiful wildlife helps to make your journey all the more memorable and rewarding.

Notepad and Pen: are great for writing down inspirational thoughts and ideas. It also serves to store ideas for future improvements that you can make on your hiking journeys.
MP3 Player: serves as an enhacement to the experience. Personally, I only put one earbud in so I can hear the birds sing as well. Recommended Music: Red Hot Chile Peppers, Spongle, John Mayer, Everclear (remeber music you listen to can alter your mood) Crazy lookin shrooms

MOST IMPORTANTLY BE SAFE! Do not take 9 hits of acid, or 10 grams of Pan Cyans because that would be a recipe for disaster . You must know your own limits. Personally, I take 1 gram of shrooms and go on a 3 mile, moderate difficulty, hiking trail; with a SOBER AND TRUSTWORTHY FRIEND. To me there is no such thing as overplanning. Make sure your backpack is comfortable to wear before you go hiking. I take 2000 ml of water on a 2.5 mile trail. Remember Have Fun! I wish to start a Good Trippin Archive and I encourage you guys to post your own ideas and TEKS on this page. One love

I have a tip!
My friends and I tend to have a habit of carrying something around all night. We call it our safety item. Usually something silly like an empty water bottle, lighter, something of the sort.
Buy a rubik's cube. It'll be the best eight bucks you've ever spent. Don't get the shitty 2 dollar one. Get name brand, baby. It's much more pleasant when the cube shifts and turns easily versus one that gets hung up all the time.

i call this item my "anchor" because it binds my body and soul to the real world. It reminds me that there must be a real world besides the mushroom world.
Another thing i personally do (but would not recommend to all) is taking cigs with you. Smoking make me relax and give me another mindset. Normally i never smoke but shrooms are another story...

Its just chemicals in the brain. Let go of the emotions or thoughts you don't want, and live in the ones you do.

As for keeping track of time, I set my stopwatch on my wristwatch before ingesting any chemical, it helps to keep track of your journey.
-------------------- "I have come to tell you that you are free. Many ages ago, My consciousness left man, that he might develop himself. I return to find this development approaching completion, but hindered by fear and by misunderstanding. You have built for yourselves psychic suits of armor, and clad in them, your vision is restricted, your movements are clumsy and painful, your skin is bruised, and your spirit is broiled in the sun. I am chaos. I am the substance from which your artists and scientists build rhythms. I am the spirit with which your children and clowns laugh in happy anarchy. I am chaos. I am alive, and I tell you that you are free." HAIL ERIS! ALL HAIL DISCORDIA!

Animal tip? If you have a pet, hang out with it and run your fingers through its fur (assuming it has that).
I find my (usually OVER joyful) dog to kind of be scared of me/my friends/roomates when using mushrooms. He looks unsure and turns his back on us. We use a lot of different drugs from time to time, only mushrooms seem to bother him. Do not worry, we never even thought about feeding him some, and I do watch everyone carefully to make sure no one tries to do it. Would you have any explanation for that? Perhaps a way to overcome his "fear" of shrooms-intoxicated fellows?
BTW This is my first post here, what a great community!

be somewhere you feel safe (no cops, parents, random people, people at all sometimes). its better to point out what you dont want than what you do. dont be the kid that tested the really strong acid driving a car on empty with nowhere to go in a thunderstorm on the highway... catch my drift. oh and some good musics always nice...marley, floyd, the beatles etc.

I wonder if he sees the unusual size of your pupils and gets scared of that. I've noticed my dog can tell that something's different, so maybe that's it.

I'd doubt it. Probably just your body language.

If the pigs ever ask why your eyes are so dialated just tell them you went to eye doctor and they put these drops in your eyes.
Remember they cant prove shit unless you tell them or you have something illegal on you.

My theory so far is that he kind of "smells" that something is going on in my belly/psyche and that it's making him uncomfortable because he'S not used to it and doesnt know what to expect, kinda like if he was seeing a shroomed person as "unstable". Or maybe I read too much dog psychology books.

I think one of the best things to do for a first time tripper, aside from making sure they do their homework, is watch what you say leading up to the experience. There's no sense telling someone about the cactus thorns you were still digging out three weeks after your last big rodeo. That open, inviting field becomes a source of anxiety when you're positive that every bit of tall grass is sticking its needles in your leg.
They need to be ready for a beautiful experience, so talk about the good things and the beauty. You know your friend (you'd better) and you know what makes them feel good so promote those ideas. And before you head out, if y'all have the right kind of agreement, a little endorphin boost never hurt...
I don't like to keep the time. While tripping it's too much of a tie to reality. If I check it at 10:30 then go away for a thousand years I feel like an idiot when I check it at 10:45.
Spraying DEET on your body is like spraying DEET on your thoughts.
The second you see fog, chomp your stash and take a walk.
Accept it.
If the cat bites, leave it home.
First post in the Shroomery, btw. I love this place.

This is my first post too, I have a cat that is normally skiddish as hell but she always likes to hang out with me and my wife when we're trippin'. Probably because we lay on the bed with music playing, Anarchy (the cat) hates being picked up so she thinks we can't when we're laying down. The rest of the time, she runs and hides if you even look at her.

This is Anarchy as a kitten, she's a lot older now but still looks like Phantom of the Opera.

Always keep a mars bar or the like handy just in case your blood sugar drops. Or a can of coke or whatever - it can do wonders if you start to feel woozy or whatever.
Every trip I've ever had I've smoked green like a trooper. Come to think of it, I've never experienced a trip without it....I've always seen a beautiful symbiosis between the two drugs. Maybe I should try a trip without any marijuana for once. Next trip is penned in around Christmas time. Got some lovely liberty caps ready to go.
Very nice ideas. Great post

i dont know if this was said, but if your tripping to hard turn on the lights, and cool your body down, it wont stop the trip but it will make it less....trippy...and if you wanna trip more then you already are, you can stand next to a heater and heat up your body, but be sure you dont heat up to much just get like a little heat going on and you shuld be good. because you dont wanna over heat and dehydrate and what not.

Taking a hot bath/shower not only speeds up the time it takes for a trip to kick in(from my experience), it leaves you feeling refreshed and your skin gets hydrated.
Something about a hot shower, gets the circulation flowing more smoothly and can help with any bodily discomfort.
As has been mentioned, weed and whippits can mellow out a trip, decrease body load, and leave feeling calm and relaxed, and the nitrous/whippits help you to laugh, which is good if you are having a bad trip, and laughing is good for you anyways.
Being out in mother nature and admiring her beauty I've heard is awesome.
Leisure/recreational activities, assuming they're not too physically demanding, can be quite enjoyable. Whether it be video games, watching a funny/trippy movie or cartoon, or drawing. Even riding a bike can be quite fun.
Don't watch films/shows that give off bad vibes.
Read some philosophical/spiritual literature, focusing on letting go, being one with yourself, etc. etc.
Stay away from negative people, people you're uncomfortable/nervous around, and anyone and anything that might give you a bad vibe, or negative feelings.
Just some helpful tips.

the free thinker said: 13.
This tip saved me during my last trip. It was a bit intense but I knew i would come down in a couple hours so all was good.
